Removing and installing tandem pump - Audi S4/S6 with 8-cyl. engine — AUDI

Removing and installing tandem pump - Audi S4/S6 with 8-cyl. engine on Audi: 24 steps, 3 torque figures.

The tandem pump on the Audi S4/S6 with the 8-cylinder engine (platform code 4A) combines the power steering pump and a second pump in one housing, and it comes out from the front left of the engine. The air pipe and duct are removed, the suction and return pipes clamped with 3094, and the high-pressure and expansion hoses unscrewed and plugged. From below, the belt is pulled down and locked with mandrel 3204. Depending on equipment, the A/C compressor is hung aside on wire or the idler wheel holder removed. The pulley comes off with pin wrench 3212 counterholding. Marking belt direction and keeping compressor wiring clear of the belt are the details that catch people.

24 steps 3 torque figures

🧭 Before you start

Remove the air pipe and duct, unplug the compressor connection if fitted, clamp the suction and return pipes and disconnect and plug the pressure and expansion hoses. Remove noise insulation, lock the belt tensioner with 3204 and take the belt off. Hang the A/C compressor aside or remove the idler holder, unscrew the pulley, detach the suction hose and remove the pump. Fit the pump at 25 Nm, reconnect, refit pulley, compressor or idler at 20 Nm and check belt alignment.

Fits: platform code 4A

  • Special tools named: 3094

Don't miss

  • Mark the poly V-belt running direction before removal; a used belt run backwards can be destroyed.
  • Plug every open connection on the pump and hoses as soon as they are disconnected.
  • Tandem pump to holder: 25 Nm.
  • A/C compressor or idler wheel holder: 20 Nm; route the compressor wiring so it cannot catch the belt.
  • Check the poly V-belt alignment before running the engine.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step
20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Vehicles with air conditioner: Fit the air conditioner compressor and tighten the bolts
20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Vehicles with no air conditioner: Fit the idler wheel with holder and tighten the bolts
25 Nm (18 lb-ft)Insert the tandem pump in the holder and tighten the bolts

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Unscrew the air pipe on the left (arrows).
  2. Unscrew the air duct on the left (arrows).
  3. Vehicles with air conditioner: Unfasten the green connection to the air conditioner compressor at the left longitudinal member.
  4. Pinch off the suction and return pipes with hose clamps 3094.
  5. Unscrew the high-pressure hose and expansion hose from the pump.

  1. Seal the connecting holes with plugs.
  2. Remove the noise insulation.
  3. Pull the poly V-belt firmly downwards.
  4. Insert the mandrel3204 to secure. [Note: Mark the direction of the poly V-belt with chalk or a felt-tip pen prior to removal. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it. Pay attention to correct positioning on pulleys when fitting the belt.]
  5. Detach the poly V-belt from the pulley.
  6. Vehicles with air conditioner: Screw out the bolts at the air conditioner compressor (arrows).
  7. Hang up the air conditioner compressor to one side with a piece of welding wire.
  8. Vehicles with no air conditioner: Remove the idler wheel with holder.
  9. Unscrew the tandem pump pulley.
  10. Use a pin wrench3212 to provide support. [Note: The engine has been removed in the illustration for greater clarity.]
  11. Detach the suction hose.
  12. Seal the connecting holes with plugs.
  13. Take out the tandem pump.
  14. Insert the tandem pump in the holder and tighten the bolts to 25 Nm. — 25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  15. Screw the suction hose to the pump.
  16. Position the poly V-belt pulley on the tandem pump and tighten the bolts.
  17. Vehicles with air conditioner: Fit the air conditioner compressor and tighten the bolts to 20 Nm. In doing so, make sure the wiring of the air conditioner compressor is routed such that it cannot catch on the poly V-belt. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  18. Check the alignment of the poly V-belt .
  19. Vehicles with no air conditioner: Fit the idler wheel with holder and tighten the bolts to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
