Removing and installing selector lever cable (vehicles from 11.2005 onwards) — AUDI
Removing and installing selector lever cable (vehicles from 11.2005 onwards) on Audi: 29 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This covers the automatic selector lever cable on the A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011) built from 11.2005 onwards, and it is a job where the setting matters more than the removal. Everything starts with the lever in D: the boot frame comes off the console and the clamping bolt on the cable is slackened about one turn through the access hole, never removed, and the lever stays in D from then on. Underneath, the noise insulation and front cross piece come off, the left exhaust pipe is tied up out of the way, and the support bracket position is marked before its bolt comes out. The ball socket is levered off the gearbox lever and the cable pulled out of the shift unit. On refitting, the gearbox lever is pushed back until the parking lock engages and then forward three notches to D before the cable is pressed on.
🧭 Before you start
Put the selector in D, remove the boot retaining frame and slacken the clamping bolt one turn through the access hole. Remove the noise insulation and front cross piece, loosen the left exhaust clamp and tie the pipe aside. Mark and unbolt the cable support bracket, pry the ball socket off the gearbox lever, take out the four retaining washers and pull the cable out of the selector mechanism. Fit the cable with a new O-ring and new retaining washers, set the gearbox lever to the parking lock and forward three notches to D, press on the ball socket with the lever supported, then adjust the cable, check the mechanism and refit the exhaust and cross piece stress-free.
Fits: Audi A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011)
- Renewed: retaining washers
Don't miss
- Only slacken the clamping bolt about one turn; it is reachable only with the lever in D.
- The four retaining washers and the cable O-ring are not reused.
- Mark the support bracket position before unbolting; the cable adjustment depends on it.
- Parking lock is in when both front wheels cannot turn the same way at once; then three notches forward to D.
- Support the gearbox lever when pressing the ball socket on, or the mechanism will not adjust correctly.
- Lightly grease the cable eye and ball socket with the specified polycarbamide grease before fitting.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
