- A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.
- Shown in illustration with gearbox support removed.Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Ensure that pin is not pressed out completely.
- Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
📋 Procedure
- Shift selector lever to position "“P”".
- On vehicles fitted with auxiliary heater, remove bolts (arrows) securing exhaust pipe of auxiliary/ additional heater to noise insulation.
- Open quick release fasteners (2) and (3) and take off rear noise insulation. [Note: To prevent damage, the flexible couplings in the front exhaust pipes must not be bent further than 10°.]
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamps (arrows).
- Disengage rear section of exhaust system at rubber mountings and remove. [Note: A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.]
- Unbolt heat shield (A) for propshaft (arrows).
- Remove heat shield (1) for exhaust system below selector mechanism (arrows).
- Unscrew bolts at gearbox/propshaft flange.
- Push propshaft (2) together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially.
- Tie propshaft up to side onto heat shield (arrow).
- Detach universal supportV.A.G 1359/2 from engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A.
- Place telescopic arm of engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A centrally below cast lug on gearbox housing (arrow) and support gearbox from below.
- First remove bolts (2) and (3) and then subframe securing bolts (1) and (4).
- Slowly lower gearbox and subframe using engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A until distance (a) is as specified.
- Pry ball socket (1) of selector lever cable off selector shaft lever.
- Unscrew support bracket from gearbox (arrows). [Note: Shown in illustration with gearbox support removed.Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.]
- Remove selector lever cable sleeve from selector mechanism cover (bottom) and slide back.
- Unscrew cover on underside of selector mechanism (arrows).
- Remove retaining clip (1) for selector lever cable by pulling it off downwards at the selector mechanism.
- Pull plastic securing spring (2) slightly forwards and press pin (3) upwards, but only as far as is necessary (arrow). [Note: Ensure that pin is not pressed out completely.]
- Pull selector lever cable (4) out of selector mechanism. [Note: Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.]
- Fit new retaining clip (1) for selector lever cable on selector mechanism.
- Insert end of selector lever cable (4) in joint on selector lever.
- Push pin (3) down (arrow).
- Check that plastic securing spring (2) has locked the pin.
- Secure cover to underside of selector mechanism (arrows).
- Attach sleeve for selector lever cable to selector mechanism cover (bottom).

- Shift selector lever to position "“P”".
- Press selector shaft lever (1) on gearbox towards the rear as far as it will go (arrow) until parking lock engages. [Note: When the parking lock has engaged it should no longer be possible to rotate both front wheels in one direction.]
- Make sure that the selector lever cable has not been bent or kinked and that it is not under tension.
- Carefully press selector lever cable (1) onto ball head of selector shaft lever. [Note: Make sure you do not bend the selector shaft lever when pressing on the cable, as this would make it impossible to obtain an accurate adjustment of the selector mechanism.]
- Bolt on the support bracket for selector lever cable (arrows).
- Adjust selector lever cable Checking and adjusting selector lever cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699.
- Install subframe, observing the correct tightening sequence Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive40.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
