Removing and installing particulate filter — AUDI

Removing and installing particulate filter on Audi: 59 steps, engines AXB, AXC, AXD, AXE. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing the diesel particulate filter on the quattro diesels covered here (platform codes and engine codes listed below) is a big underside job, because the filter only comes out between the subframe and body. Up top, the engine cover, EGR cooler change-over valve, Lambda probe, temperature senders and pressure pipes come off and the filter clamp is released. Underneath, the noise insulation and cross-piece are removed, the front exhaust pipe tied up, and the front half of the propshaft, right drive shaft and flange shaft come out. The radiator cowl goes, the subframe is supported, located with pins T10096 and lowered. With the engine pushed forward, the filter is rotated 180° and guided out. Don't bend the exhaust flexible joints beyond 10°, and keep the subframe pinned.

59 steps 40 engine codes engine codes merged from 34 documented variants

🧭 Before you start

Strip the sensors, pressure pipes and clamp from above, then remove the underbody panels, cross-piece, front propshaft section, right drive shaft, flange shaft and radiator cowl. Support the subframe, pin it with T10096 and lower it slightly, unbolt the filter bracket, push the engine forward and rotate the filter out. Refit with new gaskets and self-locking nuts, reinstall subframe, propshaft and drive shaft, align the exhaust free of stress and run the filter adaption in Guided Functions.

Fits: Audi A3 (8P, 2003–2012)

  • Renewed: gaskets

Don't miss

  • Flexible joints in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.
  • Fit locating pins T10096 as subframe bolts come out, or wheel alignment will be needed.
  • Check or apply propshaft joint markings before separating it; refit in the same position.
  • Renew gaskets and self-locking nuts; use original-type hose clips on all hose connections.
  • After fitting a new filter, perform the adaption in Guided Functions.

📋 Procedure

  1. Lift off engine cover panel (outside (1) and inside (2)) by pulling up evenly.
  2. Unclip change-over valve for exhaust gas recirculation cooler N345(item 2) from bracket.
  3. Unplug electrical connector (1) and move wiring clear.
  4. Remove bolts (arrows). [Note: Disregard (items 3, 4, 5 and 6).]
  5. Unplug electrical connector (4) for Lambda probe G39 and move Lambda probe wiring clear. [Note: Disregard (items 1, 2, 3 and 5).]

  1. Unscrew Lambda probe (3)23.
  2. Remove temperature sender before particulate filter G506(item 5).
  3. Unbolt bracket (2) for pressure pipes.
  4. Detach pressure pipe (4) at particulate filter.
  5. Slacken and remove retaining clamp (1) for particulate filter.
  6. Pull cover off air duct (release clips on sides) (arrows).
  7. Unclip air duct at the bottom by releasing clips (arrows).
  8. Detach air duct (bottom) together with air hose.
  9. Remove top bolts (upper arrows) for radiator cowl.
  10. Remove front right wheel.
  11. Remove centre noise insulation (fasteners 1 ... 3).
  12. Remove noise insulation (right-side) (fasteners 1 ... 3).
  13. Remove front cross-piece for underbody (arrows). [Note: To avoid damage, the flexible joints in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.]
  14. Loosen nuts on clamp (1).
  15. Push clamp back and tie up front exhaust pipe to underbody.
  16. To support propshaft, position engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A underneath with a piece of wood (A) placed in between.
  17. Remove bolts (arrows) securing heat shield and propshaft centre bearing and detach heat shield.
  18. Fit bolts (arrows) for propshaft centre bearing again.
  19. Unbolt flexible coupling for propshaft at bevel box (arrows) (counterhold using a suitable lever at the triangular flange).
  20. Check whether markings (arrow A) and (arrow B) are visible on constant velocity joint and propshaft. Apply markings if necessary.
  21. Remove bolts (arrows).
  22. ⚠ Take care to bend the front section of the propshaft tube downwards as little as possible when detaching. — Push front section of propshaft tube towards the front and swivel it out of rear section of propshaft tube. [Note: Avoid damaging the seal (arrow) in the propshaft flange when removing and installing.]
  23. Pull front section of propshaft tube off centring pin on bevel box horizontally, swivel downwards and detach.
  24. Unscrew temperature sender after particulate filter G527(item 1) from exhaust pipe behind particulate filter.
  25. Unscrew pressure pipe (2) going to exhaust gas pressure sensor 1G450.
  26. Remove exhaust gas pressure sensor 1G450 together with pressure pipes.
  27. Unbolt drive shaft (right-side) from bevel box flange.
  28. Unbolt heat shield for drive shaft (right-side) (arrows).
  29. Remove flange shaft (right-side) 39.
  30. Unscrew bolts (2) and (3) for pendulum support. [Note: Disregard (item 1).]
  31. Remove air intake hose (left-side) by lifting retaining clips (arrows) slightly.
  32. Unplug electrical connector (1).
  33. Unscrew bottom bolts (bottom arrows) and remove radiator cowl downwards while pressing engine to rear.
  34. Unplug electrical connector (1) at oil level and oil temperature sender G266.
  35. Unclip bracket (2) for wire to oil level and oil temperature sender G266 from subframe.
  36. Unplug electrical connector (arrow) at front left vehicle level sender G78.
  37. Unbolt coupling rod (left and right) from anti-roll bar (arrow).
  38. Unbolt bracket for exhaust system (arrows).
  39. Pry bracket off pins on front exhaust pipe.
  40. To support subframe, position engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A underneath with a piece of wood (1) placed in between. [Note: Locate subframe and suspension brackets in position with locating pins T10096, as otherwise wheel alignment must be performed 40.]
  41. Remove bolts (1 ... 6) for subframe, fit locating pins T10096 one after the other 40.
  42. Slightly lower subframe with engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
