Removing and installing left flange shaft oil seal — AUDI

Removing and installing left flange shaft oil seal on Audi: 30 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the left flange shaft oil seal on the platform codes listed below means taking the left drive shaft out and pulling the flange shaft from the gearbox. Support device 3250 goes in before the car is lifted, and the drive shaft/wheel hub bolt and wheel bolts are loosened with the wheels on the ground. With the wheel off, the torsion bar thread length from nut to stud face is measured and noted before tension is released, so ride height can be restored. Then the noise insulation, lower swivel joint, damper and coupling rod bolts and the pendulum support come off, and the drive shaft is pressed out. The flange shaft is pulled with VW 771 and VW 421, the seal extracted and the new one driven to its stop.

30 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fit the support device, loosen hub and wheel bolts on the ground, then lift and remove the wheel. Note the torsion bar thread length and release tension. Disconnect the swivel joint, damper and coupling rod, unbolt the drive shaft and pendulum support and remove the shaft. Pull the flange shaft, renew its circlip, extract the seal, grease and drive in the new one. Refit the flange shaft and drive shaft, check the final drive oil and refit wheel and insulation.

Fits: platform code 70A

  • Renewed: bolts, flange shaft circlip

Don't miss

  • Measure and note torsion bar thread length (a) before releasing tension.
  • Always renew the bolts at the swivel joint and the flange shaft circlip.
  • Half-fill the space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease before fitting.
  • Drive the oil seal in onto its stop with VW 195.
  • Check final drive oil level with the gearbox installed.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
