Special tools and workshop equipment required

Ring spanner set 3337

Engine/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A
Hot paste G 052 112 A3

Removing

Note:

All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be fitted in the same position when installing.

Pull off rear engine cover panel -arrows-.

Release hose clamp -1- using hose clamp pliers 3094 and disconnect hose from coolant expansion tank.
Unbolt coolant expansion tank -2- (-arrows-).
Disconnect wiring for coolant shortage indicator switch -F66 at bottom of coolant expansion tank.
Place coolant expansion tank to side with coolant hose -3- still attached.
If necessary, plug opening with suitable plug.

Remove air cleaner cover -2-.
Remove air duct -1-.

Note:

Use removal lever 80-200 to remove clips -arrows-.

Unplug electrical connector -3- at solenoid valve for activated charcoal filter -N80 -Item 2-.
Detach solenoid valve from bracket.
Unplug electrical connector -4- at air mass meter.
Turn hose -1- for secondary air pump to left and pull off.
Disconnect air duct -5- at air mass meter.
Remove bolt -arrow-.

Remove air cleaner housing together with air mass meter.

Disconnect air duct from throttle valve control part -arrow-.

Detach air hose -arrow- from pipe for secondary air system combination valves.

Detach electrical connector -4- from retainer at left of bulkhead and unplug.
Disengage wiring leading down to lambda probe.

Release quick-fasteners -2- and -3- and remove rear section of noise insulation.

Note:

The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 °- otherwise it can be damaged.

Separate exhaust system at clamps 1- and -2-.

Remove both heat shields -arrows-.

Remove heat shield for propshaft -A- -arrows-.
Unscrew bolts on gearbox/propshaft flange.
Slide propshaft together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints move along their axes.
Place propshaft on exhaust system.

Note:

The gearbox must not be supported on gearbox oil pan.

Place lifting arm of engine/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A behind gearbox oil pan at the position marked with the -arrow- and support gearbox.

Note:

The lock carrier must be installed.

Remove bolts -2- and -3- first, then unscrew securing bolts -1- and -4- on subframe.
Lower gearbox and subframe slowly using engine/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A.
Lay wiring for lambda probe clear.

Unscrew lambda probe -arrow- using special tool 3337; hold onto catalytic converter as counter-weight to prevent damage to flexible pipe (de-coupling element).

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

Notes:

The screw thread on the lambda probe is coated with a special paste. This paste must not be allowed to penetrate the openings on the probe.
Tightening torque: 55 Nm.
All cable ties which are opened or cut open on removal must be replaced in the same position when installing.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
