Removing and installing front brake cable — AUDI

Removing and installing front brake cable on Audi: 22 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Changing the front handbrake cable on the platform codes listed below (7HA and 7EA) is split between the cab and the underside. Inside, the handbrake lever trim and bracket trim come off and the adjuster nut is run off the cable. Underneath, the return spring is unhooked, the spring retainer and cable nut are removed, and the cable is pressed out of its brackets and drawn out through the underbody. The new cable is fed through the underbody into the interior, clipped into both retainers and attached to the lever with the adjusting nut before the underside fixings go back on. The step that decides the result is adjusting the handbrake afterwards; a cable that is merely fitted and not adjusted will not hold properly or may drag.

22 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the lever trim and bracket trim, unscrew the adjuster nut, then raise the vehicle and release the return spring, spring retainer and cable nut underneath. Press the cable out of its brackets and pull it out. Route the new cable through to the interior, seat it in both retainers, attach it at the lever, refit the underside parts, adjust the handbrake and refit the trim.

Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T6 (7E)

Don't miss

  • Press the lever trim tab out carefully with a screwdriver to avoid breaking it.
  • Seat the new cable in both retainers before attaching it to the lever.
  • Reattach the return spring to both underbody and spring retainer.
  • Adjust the handbrake before fitting the lever trim back on.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
