Removing and installing engine oil cooler (top): Audi A6 C6 5.0 (BUH, BUJ, CMPA, CSPA, …)

Step-by-step removing and installing engine oil cooler (top) for the Audi A6 C6 5.0: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Replacing the upper engine oil cooler on the petrol engines listed below, under platform code 4F, means taking off the top section of the intake manifold first, so it is a top-down job with no lifting. Coolant is drained before anything else. The cooler sits beneath a cluster of connectors, vacuum hoses and the vacuum reservoir: two connectors are unplugged, three vacuum hoses pulled off, the reservoir unbolted and the connector bracket moved aside before the cooler can be detached. Some engine oil will run out, so a cloth goes underneath. On refit, the result depends on new O-rings and the correct original-type hose clips on every hose connection, followed by checking the oil level and refilling the coolant.

🧭 Before you start

Drain the coolant and remove the upper intake manifold. Unplug the two connectors, pull off the vacuum hoses, unbolt and remove the vacuum reservoir and move the connector bracket aside. Detach the oil cooler with a cloth underneath to catch oil. Fit the cooler with new O-rings, secure the hoses with the correct clips, refit the manifold, then check the oil level and fill with coolant.

Fits: Audi A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011)

  • Opens: coolant
  • Renewed: o-rings

Don't miss

  • Drain the coolant before disturbing the oil cooler.
  • Place a cloth under the oil cooler; engine oil escapes when it is detached.
  • Fit new O-rings on the oil cooler.
  • Use hose clips of the same type as original equipment on every hose.
  • Check the engine oil level and top up coolant once refitted.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
