Removing and installing engine oil cooler on engine: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7 4.2 (BNS)
Step-by-step removing and installing engine oil cooler on engine for the Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7 4.2 (BNS): 9 steps.
This job takes the engine oil cooler off the BNS engine on the Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E) and the 8H platform. The oil cooler sits behind the alternator, so the alternator comes out first, followed by the bracket for the torque reaction support and then the alternator bracket itself. With those out of the way the two coolant hoses are pulled off the cooler, a used-oil collection unit goes underneath and the cooler is unbolted. There is little that can go wrong if the order is followed. The points that decide a dry result are renewing the O-rings between cooler and engine and putting the coolant hoses back with the correct type of hose clips rather than whatever is to hand.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the alternator, the torque reaction support bracket and the alternator bracket. Detach both coolant hoses from the cooler, place an oil collection unit below the engine and unbolt the cooler. Fit new O-rings, secure the hoses with original-type clips, then refit the torque reaction support bracket and the alternator.
Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E)
- Renewed: o-rings
Don't miss
- Renew the O-rings between oil cooler and engine every time it is removed.
- Use hose clips of the same type as original equipment on the coolant hoses.
- Have an oil collection unit in place before unbolting the cooler.
- Top up and check coolant and engine oil levels after refitting, as is normal practice after opening both circuits.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
