Removing and installing drive chain for high-pressure pump (left-side) and oil pump — AUDI

Removing and installing drive chain for high-pressure pump (left-side) and oil pump on Audi: 19 steps, 1 torque figure, engines CCGA.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
  • Special tools named: locking pin, locking tool

Don't miss

  • Place a cloth beneath the sump (top section) to catch escaping oil.
  • Use extended hexagon socket wrench with ball head and unscrew plug (arrow) for "„TDC“" marking from sump (top section).
  • Make sure drive chain sprockets align to prevent damage to drive chain. After renewing high-pressure pump, align chain sprocket for high-pressure pump before fitting drive chain 23. — Fit drive chain (1).
  • Disregard (arrow).

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove timing chain cover (bottom) .
  2. ⚠ Irreparable engine damage can be caused if the camshaft timing chains slip. When turning the crankshaft, turn it only in direction of engine rotation (arrow). — Use a lever and a 30 mm socket to turn crankshaft to "„TDC“".
  3. Lock high-pressure pump hub with diesel injection pump locking pin3359.
  4. Slacken off bolts (arrows) for chain sprocket (1) 1 turn. [Note: Place a cloth beneath the sump (top section) to catch escaping oil.]
  5. Use extended hexagon socket wrench with ball head and unscrew plug (arrow) for "„TDC“" marking from sump (top section).

  1. Screw locking pin T40201 into hole (20 Nm); if necessary, turn crankshaft (1) backwards and forwards slightly to fully centralise locking pin. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
  2. ⚠ If a used drive chain for high-pressure pump (left-side) and oil pump rotates in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause irreparable damage.Mark running direction of drive chain with coloured arrows for re-installation. — Wrap insulating tape around tip and shaft of a 3.3 mm drill bit to avoid cuts when using drill bit as locking tool.
  3. Press tensioning rail (1) of chain tensioner for high-pressure pump (left-side) in direction of (arrow) and lock chain tensioner by inserting 3.3 mm drill bit (item 2).
  4. Unscrew bolt (3) and remove tensioning rail.
  5. Detach guide rail (1)(arrow).
  6. Detach guide rail (2)(arrow).
  7. Detach drive chain (1).
  8. ⚠ Make sure drive chain sprockets align to prevent damage to drive chain. After renewing high-pressure pump, align chain sprocket for high-pressure pump before fitting drive chain 23. — Fit drive chain (1).
  9. Fit guide rail (2). [Note: Disregard (arrow).]
  10. Pull drill bit (1) out of locating hole, this releases the chain tensioner (2).
  11. Tighten bolts (arrows) for chain sprocket (1).
  12. Remove diesel injection pump locking pin3359.
  13. Tighten plug for "„TDC“" drilling in sump (top section) Sump (top section) - exploded view.
  14. Install timing chain cover (bottom) .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
