Removing and installing desiccant cartridge (Modine condenser) — AUDI

Removing and installing desiccant cartridge (Modine condenser) on Audi: 35 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

35 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: platform code FV

  • Opens: refrigerant (A/C)

Don't miss

  • So as not to damage the condenser, always engage the welding wire at the strainer as shown.
  • The plug, O-ring and desiccant cartridge must always be renewed after the receiver has been opened Electronic parts catalogue.
  • Moisten the O-ring of the cap with refrigerant oil before fitting .

📋 Procedure

  1. ⚠ Danger from escaping pressurised refrigerant.Frostbite on skin and other parts of the body.Extract the refrigerant and then immediately open up the refrigerant circuit.Extract the refrigerant again if more than 10 minutes have passed since the initial extraction and the refrigerant circuit has not been opened up. Renewed evaporation leads to the build-up of pressure in the refrigerant circuit. — Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with air conditioner service station).
  2. Remove bumper cover (front) General body repairs, exterior63Bumper (front); Exploded view - bumper (front).
  3. Remove the air duct at the lock carrier 23Air filter; Removing and installing air filter housing or 24Air filter; Removing and installing air filter housing.
  4. Remove air cleaner housing 23Air cleaner; Removing and installing air cleaner housing or 24Air cleaner; Removing and installing air cleaner housing.
  5. Remove radiator for charge air cooling circuit 19Radiator/radiator fan; Removing and installing radiator.

  1. Remove the radiator cowl 19Radiator/radiator fan (exploded view - radiator cowl and radiator fan).
  2. Remove the charge air cooler 19Radiator/radiator fan (exploded view - radiator cowl and radiator fan).
  3. Check pressure in refrigerant circuit via pressure gauge of air conditioner service station Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  4. ⚠ Danger from escaping pressurised refrigerant.Frostbite on skin and other parts of the body.Only remove the circlip if the pressure in the refrigerant circuit is equal to or less than the atmospheric pressure. — Detach refrigerant lines from condenser Detaching and attaching refrigerant lines at condenser
  5. Unfasten radiator and tilt as far as possible towards engine 19Radiator/radiator fans (Removing and installing radiator).
  6. Detach safety sticker (if applicable).
  7. Unscrew cap (1).
  8. Press cap (1) in slightly.
  9. Detach the circlip (arrow) and use an M12 bolt to pull the cap out of the condenser (2).
  10. Make a welding wire (∅ 2 mm) with the following dimensions.
  11. So as not to damage the condenser, always engage the welding wire at the strainer as shown.
  12. Use the welding wire (1) to carefully pull the filter element (strainer) (2) out of the receiver.
  13. Seal the open receiver with the cap (1) to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture.
  14. Unscrew protective cap (1) with socket T70T10128.
  15. Check pressure in refrigerant circuit via pressure gauge of air conditioner service station Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with air conditioner service station).
  16. ⚠ Danger from escaping pressurised refrigerant.Frostbite on skin and other parts of the body.Only remove the circlip if the pressure in the refrigerant circuit is equal to or less than the atmospheric pressure. — Press cap (1) in slightly.
  17. Detach the circlip (arrow) and use an M12 bolt to pull the cap out of the condenser (2).
  18. Using long-nose pliers, pull dryer unit (1) out of condenser (2).
  19. Seal the open receiver with the cap to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture. [Note: The plug, O-ring and desiccant cartridge must always be renewed after the receiver has been opened Electronic parts catalogue.]
  20. Check threads and sealing surfaces of receiver at condenser for contamination or damage via opening.
  21. Insert filter element (with strainer) (2) in correct position in receiver of condenser. [Note: Keep bag with air-tight seal containing desiccant cartridge closed as long as possible. Only open bag immediately before inserting desiccant cartridge in condenser. After opening bag, desiccant cartridge soon becomes saturated with moisture from ambient air and becomes unusable.]
  22. Take desiccant cartridge out of its bag and insert it in receiver of condenser.
  23. Take dryer unit (1) out of its bag and insert it in condenser (2).
  24. Insert the cap (1) and press it downwards until the circlip (arrow) can engage in the groove. [Note: Moisten the O-ring of the cap with refrigerant oil before fitting .]
  25. Version 1: Press on protective cap.
  26. Version 2: Screw in protective cap using socket T70T10128.
  27. Attach safety sticker (if applicable).
  28. Evacuate and charge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with air conditioner service station).
  29. Start up air conditioner after charging refrigerant circuit .
  30. As a final step, interrogate event memory and erase any entries displayed ("“Guided Fault Finding”").

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
