Removing and installing data bus diagnostic interface J533 - vehicles up to model year 2013 and all vehicles with high-voltage system — AUDI
Removing and installing data bus diagnostic interface J533 - vehicles up to model year 2013 and all vehicles with high-voltage system on Audi: 8 steps.
On the Audi A8 D4 (4H) up to model year 2013, and on all hybrid versions, data bus diagnostic interface J533 (the gateway) sits behind the luggage compartment back panel trim. On high-voltage cars the drive battery cover has to come off as well. Physically it is a small unit held in a retaining frame by a clip, with one electrical connector and a fibre-optic connector. The care belongs at the two ends of the job. If the gateway is being renewed, start the replace control unit function on the tester before disconnecting anything. Once the fibre-optic plug is free, cap it at once with the protective cap, since a dirty or scratched MOST connector causes faults that are hard to trace.
🧭 Before you start
Start the replace function on the tester if the unit is being renewed. Remove the luggage compartment back panel trim and, on hybrids, the drive battery cover. Release the clip, pull J533 from its frame, unplug the electrical and fibre-optic connectors and cap the fibre-optic plug. Refit in reverse and reinstall the drive battery cover where removed.
Fits: Audi A8 D4 (4H, 2010–2017)
Don't miss
- Run the replace control unit function before removing a gateway that will be renewed.
- Cap the fibre-optic connector immediately to keep it clean and undamaged.
- Release the connector catch before sliding the retaining clip; do not lever on the fibre-optic plug.
- On high-voltage vehicles follow the high-voltage safety rules before removing the drive battery cover.

📋 Procedure
- If control unit is to be renewed, select the "“Replace control unit”" function for appropriate control unit in .
- Remove luggage compartment back panel trim General body repairs, interior70Luggage compartment trim panels; Overview of fitting locations - luggage compartment trim panels.
- On vehicles with high-voltage system, remove cover for drive battery Electrical system, hybrid93High-voltage battery unit; Exploded view - high-voltage battery.
- Release retaining clip (arrow) and pull data bus diagnostic interface J533(item 2) out of retaining frame.
- Unplug electrical connector (3) and connector (1) for fibre optic cable.
- Seal open connector plug (2) of fibre optic cable with protective cap for cable connectorVAS 6223/9(item 1). [Note: Protective cap prevents contamination of or mechanical damage to end face of fibre optic cable which would impair light transmission.]
- Unplug electrical connector by releasing catch (1) and moving retaining clip in direction of (arrow).
- On vehicles with high-voltage system, install cover for drive battery Electrical system, hybrid93High-voltage battery unit; Exploded view - high-voltage battery.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
