Removing and installing crankshaft: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7 2.5 TDI (AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, …)
Step-by-step removing and installing crankshaft for the Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 / A4 B6/B7 2.5 TDI: 8 steps, 2 torque figures.
This is the main bearing cap side of refitting the crankshaft on the A4 B6/B7 (8E) and the 8H platform, with the AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU, BCZ, BDG, BDH and BFC engines. With the crankshaft laid in, the dowel sleeves go into the bearing caps, the caps are fitted, and all sixteen cap bolts are replaced with new ones. The bolts are then tightened in two groups: bolts 1 to 8 to 60 Nm and a further 90°, then bolts 9 to 16 to 60 Nm and a further 90°, with a fixed wrench for the angle stage. Bolts A finish at 28 Nm. Following the sequence exactly and never reusing the stretch bolts are what decide whether the bearing clearances come out right.
🧭 Before you start
With the crankshaft in place, renew all bearing cap bolts and fit the dowel sleeves into the caps. Tighten bolts 1 to 8 to 60 Nm and turn them 90° further, then do the same with bolts 9 to 16. Finish by tightening bolts A to 28 Nm.
Fits: Audi A4 Cabriolet B6/B7 (8H), Audi A4 B6/B7 (8E)
Don't miss
- Renew bearing cap bolts 1 to 16; they are angle-tightened and must not be reused.
- Insert the dowel sleeves in the bearing caps before fitting them.
- Follow the sequence: bolts 1 to 8 first, then bolts 9 to 16, each to 60 Nm plus 90°.
- Use a fixed wrench for the 90° angle stage, not a ratchet that can overshoot.
- Tighten bolts A to 28 Nm last.

🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 28 Nm (21 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts (A) |
| 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
