Removing and installing conventional clutch: Audi A3

Step-by-step removing and installing conventional clutch for the Audi A3: 13 steps, 1 torque figure. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm.

Replacing a conventional clutch on cars with platform code 8L starts with the gearbox out, and from then on it is about bolt technique and centring. The pressure plate is held with counter-hold tool 3067 and its six bolts are slackened clockwise in quarter-turn steps of 90° until the spring tension is gone, so the plate does not distort. The clutch plate must match the engine code and go in the correct way round, centred with mandrel 3190 A, or T10097 for the larger hub. The pressure plate locates on dowel pins, the bolts are run down by hand, drawn in clockwise in 90° steps until the housing meets the flywheel and finally tightened to 22 Nm.

🧭 Before you start

With the gearbox removed, hold the flywheel with 3067 and slacken the six pressure plate bolts clockwise in 90° steps. Remove the pressure plate and clutch plate; clean the bell housing and flywheel if the clutch has burnt. Fit the correct clutch plate the right way round, centre it with the mandrel, fit the pressure plate onto the dowels, draw it down evenly and tighten to 22 Nm before refitting the gearbox.

Fits: Audi A3 (8L, 1996–2003)

Don't miss

  • Loosen and tighten the six bolts clockwise in 90° steps so the pressure plate is not distorted.
  • Select clutch plate and pressure plate by engine code; versions differ.
  • Note the installation direction of the clutch plate before fitting it.
  • Use mandrel 3190 A, or T10097 for the larger hub, to centre the clutch plate.
  • Reverse the counter-hold tool 3067 for tightening, then take all six bolts to 22 Nm.
  • If the clutch burnt out, clean bell housing and flywheel thoroughly before fitting new parts.

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove gearbox .
  2. Apply counter-hold tool3067 in order to loosen bolts.
  3. Working clockwise, loosen all six bolts consecutively in steps of 90° (1/4 turn) until the pressure plate is released.
  4. Take off pressure plate and clutch plate. [Note: Select the correct clutch plate and pressure plate according to engine code: Parts catalogue. If the clutch has burnt out, thoroughly clean the bell housing, flywheel and parts of the engine facing the gearbox in order to prevent odours.Clean input shaft splines and (in the case of a used clutch plate) the hub splines. Remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of grease for clutch plate splinesG 000 100 to the splines. Then move clutch plate backwards and forwards on input shaft until hub moves freely on shaft. It is important to remove excess grease.Pressure plates have an anti-corrosion coating and are greased. Only the contact surface may be cleaned, otherwise the service life of the clutch will be considerably reduced.Pressure plate contact surface and clutch plate lining must make full contact with flywheel. Only then insert bolts.]
  5. Note correct installation position of clutch plate:

  1. Use centring mandrel3190 A to centralise clutch plate.
  2. Reverse position of counter-hold tool3067 when installing.
  3. Use centring mandrel T10097 to centralise clutch plate with larger hub diameter.
  4. Fit pressure plate onto dowel pins.
  5. Screw in all 6 bolts evenly by hand until bolt heads make contact with pressure plate.
  6. Working clockwise, tighten all six bolts consecutively in steps of 90° (1/4 turn) until the housing makes contact with the flywheel.
  7. Working clockwise, tighten all 6 bolts to final torque consecutively.
  8. Install gearbox Installing gearbox.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
