Removing and installing condenser - RS models — AUDI

Removing and installing condenser - RS models on Audi: 13 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is the condenser swap on the RS versions built on the platform codes listed below, among them the A4 B8 (8K) and A5 (8T and 8F) platforms. On these cars the condenser comes out without taking the whole front end apart. After the refrigerant has been discharged, the lines come off the condenser, the air ducts are released at the intermediate flange to the air cleaner housing and swung towards the centre of the car, and the condenser is unclipped and lifted out of its mountings on the radiator. The make-or-break points are on the refrigerant side: a removed condenser holds refrigerant oil that has to be accounted for, and the circuit must be evacuated, recharged and started up correctly afterwards. Finish by clearing the event memory.

13 steps

🧭 Before you start

Switch off, discharge the refrigerant circuit and detach the refrigerant lines from the condenser. Remove the bolts, detach both air ducts at the intermediate flange and swivel them inwards after releasing their retaining tabs. Release the retaining clips and lift the condenser out of its radiator mountings. Refit, reconnect the lines, evacuate and charge the circuit, start up the air conditioner and erase any event memory entries.

Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015); platform code 83

  • Opens: refrigerant (A/C)

Don't miss

  • Discharge the circuit through the service equipment before touching the lines.
  • Each air duct has two retaining tabs, top and bottom; release both before swivelling it.
  • A removed condenser contains refrigerant oil; observe the oil-quantity rules when renewing it.
  • Seal open refrigerant connections immediately to keep moisture out.
  • After charging, follow the start-up procedure and clear the event memory.

📋 Procedure

  1. Switch off ignition.
  2. Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  3. Detach refrigerant lines from condenser .
  4. Remove bolts (arrows).
  5. Detach air duct (1) at intermediate flange (2) for air cleaner housing (both sides).

  1. Release retaining tabs (arrows A) (two on each air duct - one on top and one on bottom) and swivel air ducts (1) (left and right) towards centre of vehicle (arrow B). [Note: On vehicles with a protective grille (A) (with protection against gravel and grit on certain vehicles only), the front bumper cover and the protective grille (A) must be removed to be able to swivel and remove the air duct (B).]
  2. Release retaining clips (1) in direction of (arrow A) and lift condenser (2) out of mountings at radiator (arrows B). [Note: When it has been removed, the condenser contains refrigerant oil which must be returned to the refrigerant circuit (together with the new condenser) Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Renewing components of refrigerant circuit.]
  3. Attach refrigerant lines to condenser .
  4. Evacuate and charge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  5. Start up air conditioner after charging refrigerant circuit .
  6. Re-install remaining components (removed earlier).
  7. Switch on ignition.
  8. As a final step, interrogate event memory and erase any entries displayed ("“Guided Fault Finding”").

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
