Removing and installing condenser - all vehicles except RS models on Audi: 22 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.

22 steps

🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015); platform code 83

  • Opens: refrigerant (A/C)
  • Special tools named: VAS 5051

Don't miss

  • Different fitting locations for G17 (this illustration shows the layout for model year 2008 vehicles)
  • On vehicles with a protective grille (A) (with protection against gravel and grit on certain vehicles only), the front bumper cover and the protective grille (A) must be removed to be able to swivel and remove the air duct (B).
  • For greater clarity, the installation position is shown with the bumper cover removed.
  • The bumper cover has been removed in the illustration.

📋 Procedure

  1. Switch off ignition.
  2. Discharge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station). [Note: Depending on the position of the service connection at the refrigerant line and the vehicle version, it may be necessary to remove the additional reinforcement for the body brace (left-side) to make it possible to connect the service coupling of the air conditioner service station (e.g. on the Audi Q5) Running gear, axles, steering40Suspension strut, upper links; Exploded view - suspension strut, upper links and Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).]
  3. Detach refrigerant lines from condenser .
  4. Remove bolts (or clips) (1, 2, 3 and 5)General body repairs, exterior50Lock carrier; Exploded view - lock carrier.
  5. Lift cover (4) at lock carrier and disengage it at radiator grille General body repairs, exterior50Lock carrier; Exploded view - lock carrier.

  1. Remove bolts (arrows).
  2. Detach air duct (1) at intermediate flange (2) for air cleaner housing.
  3. Unplug electrical connector (C) at refrigerant pressure and temperature sender G395.
  4. Unplug electrical connector (B) to front parking aid senders and electrical connector to ambient temperature sensor G17(item A). [Note: Different fitting locations for G17 (this illustration shows the layout for model year 2008 vehicles)]
  5. Remove closure plate for front bumper cover (depending on vehicle version; currently not always necessary e.g. on Audi Q5) General body repairs, exterior63Bumper (front); Exploded view - bumper cover. [Note: On vehicles with a protective grille (A) (with protection against gravel and grit on certain vehicles only), the front bumper cover and the protective grille (A) must be removed to be able to swivel and remove the air duct (B).]
  6. Release retaining tabs (arrows A) (two on each air duct - one on top and one on bottom) and swivel air ducts (1) (left and right) towards centre of vehicle (arrow B).
  7. Release retaining clips (arrow A) and swivel power steering cooling pipe (1) towards front (arrow B).
  8. Lift cooling pipe of power steering fluid cooler off condenser and set it down on engine. [Note: For greater clarity, the installation position is shown with the bumper cover removed.]
  9. Release retaining clips (1) in direction of (arrow A) and lift condenser (2) out of mountings at radiator (arrows B). [Note: The bumper cover has been removed in the illustration.] [Note: When it has been removed, the condenser contains refrigerant oil which must be returned to the refrigerant circuit (together with the new condenser) Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Renewing components of refrigerant circuit. There are different versions of the condenser. Check the correct version and allocation prior to installation Checking version of condenser and Electronic parts catalogue. The refrigerant circuit capacity differs depending on the design of the condenser; refer to Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Capacities for refrigerant R134a/refrigerant oil and approved refrigerant oils.]
  10. Attach refrigerant lines to condenser .
  11. Install cooling pipe of power steering fluid cooler Running gear, axles, steering48Hydraulic power steering; Exploded view - hydraulic lines, reservoir.
  12. Install lock carrier cover General body repairs, exterior50Lock carrier; Exploded view - lock carrier.
  13. Evacuate and charge refrigerant circuit Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87Refrigerant circuit (Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a; Refrigerant circuit; Working with the air conditioner service station).
  14. Re-install remaining components (removed earlier).
  15. Switch on ignition.
  16. Interrogate event memory of operating and display unit (Climatronic control unit J255) and erase any faults displayed Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 ("Guided Fault Finding").
  17. Start up air conditioner after charging refrigerant circuit . [Note: Also observe notes on starting up air conditioner after charging Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a87General notes on air conditioning systems (before using air conditioner after system has been re-charged).]

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
