Removing and installing brake shoes, brake caliper FN 44 — AUDI

Removing and installing brake shoes, brake caliper FN 44 on Audi: 9 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the VW Transporter T5 (7HA) and T6 (7EA) with the FN 44 rear caliper, the handbrake is a small drum inside the brake disc, and getting at its shoes means taking the disc off. The wheel comes off, the pads are removed and the brake carrier is unbolted. If the shoes have worn a lip into the drum the disc will not come off, so turn it until the handbrake adjustment nut shows through a wheel bolt hole and back it off against the extension spring. With the disc and drum off, the extension springs are unhooked and the hold-down pins with their compression springs are removed, releasing the shoes. Reassembly is the reverse, and the job is not done until the handbrake has been adjusted.

9 steps

🧭 Before you start

Remove the wheel, brake pads and brake carrier. Turn the disc until the adjuster nut is visible through a wheel bolt hole, slacken it against the extension spring and pull the disc and drum off. Unhook the extension springs, remove the hold-down pins and springs and take out the shoes. Reassemble in reverse and adjust the handbrake.

Fits: VW Transporter T5 (7H), VW Transporter T6 (7E)

Don't miss

  • Slacken the handbrake adjuster through a wheel bolt hole before pulling the disc and drum.
  • Note the extension spring positions before unhooking them.
  • Hold-down pins and compression springs must be refitted to each shoe.
  • Adjust the handbrake after reassembly.
  • Clean shoe contact points on the backplate and keep grease off the linings; general practice.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
