Removing and installing axle beam, front-wheel drive — AUDI

Removing and installing axle beam, front-wheel drive on Audi: 17 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Here the leaf-sprung rear axle beam comes out of the front-wheel-drive version for the platform codes listed below. With no propshaft to deal with, it is shorter than the all-wheel-drive job, but the safety point is the same: once the rear wheels are off, strap the car to the lift with T10038, then strap the axle beam to an engine and gearbox jack and raise it slightly. Free the rear level sender G76, unbolt the anti-roll bar clamps, separate the ABS sensor connectors and remove the rear brake pads. The shock absorbers come off their axle mountings, then the leaf spring nuts, saddle plates and U bolts are removed and the beam is lowered. New bolts and nuts are used on refit, and the spring guide pin must locate.

🧭 Before you start

Remove the rear wheels and strap the car to the hoist, then support the axle beam on a strapped jack. Free the level sender, anti-roll bar clamps, ABS connectors, brake pads and shock absorbers. Remove the leaf spring nuts, saddle plates and U bolts and lower the beam. Reinstall with new securing bolts and nuts, check the leaf spring guide pin locates, and road test.

Fits: VW Caddy IV (SA, 2015–2020)

  • Renewed: securing bolts

Don't miss

  • Strap the vehicle to the hoist before taking the axle's weight on the jack.
  • Secure the axle beam to the jack with the tensioning strap before lowering it.
  • Only new securing bolts and nuts go back in.
  • The leaf spring guide pin must engage in the hole in the leaf spring mounting.
  • Finish with a road test.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
