Removing and installing auxiliary radiator: Audi A3 (BHT, BSB, BTE, CAEB, …)
Step-by-step removing and installing auxiliary radiator for the Audi A3: 21 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Removing and refitting an auxiliary radiator on cars covering the platform codes listed below, with a long list of petrol and diesel engines. These small radiators sit low in the front corners behind the bumper, so access is through the wheel arch: front wheel off, wheel spoiler and bumper-cover mounting removed, and the front of the wheel housing liner pushed back. From there it is a cooling-system job: drip tray underneath, hoses clamped off with hose clamps, clips released, then the nuts slackened so the radiator can be lifted off its studs. Left and right units come out differently, and the right one has to be swivelled bottom-back, top-forward to clear its studs. Mask the bumper cover and wing first, and finish with fresh coolant and original-type hose clips.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the front wheel, wheel spoiler and bumper-cover mounting, then fold the front of the wheel housing liner back. Mask the bumper and wing, clamp off and disconnect the coolant hoses over a drip tray, slacken the nuts and lift the radiator off its studs; the right-side unit swivels out and its air duct comes off separately. Refit in reverse with correct hose clips and fill with new coolant.
Fits: Audi A3 (8V, 2012–2020)
- Opens: coolant
- Special tools named: VAS 5014
Don't miss
- Mask the bumper cover and wing before working in the gap; the radiator edges mark paint easily.
- Clamp off the coolant hoses before releasing the clips to keep coolant loss down.
- Some nuts are only loosened, not removed; the radiator lifts forwards off the studs.
- Secure every hose with the original type of hose clip, and do not reuse the drained coolant.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
