Removing and installing alternator, vehicles with TDI engine — AUDI

Removing and installing alternator, vehicles with TDI engine on Audi: 10 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This alternator removal applies to Audi TDI models on the platform codes listed below, and the key to access is putting the lock carrier into the service position. With both batteries disconnected and the lock carrier moved forward, the poly V-belt comes off and the alternator front is reachable. The DF connector is unplugged, the deflector cap levered off and the B+ wire removed from its thread. Two bolts hold the alternator, and once they are out it lifts upwards out of the car. The refit detail that matters is the mounting bushes: they are driven back about 4 mm before the alternator goes in, so it slides between the brackets and the bolts can pull it tight. A final run with the engine started confirms the belt tracks properly.

10 steps

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the batteries, move the lock carrier to the service position and remove the belt. Disconnect the DF connector and B+ wire, remove the two alternator bolts and lift the alternator out upwards. Drive the mounting bushes back about 4 mm, refit in reverse and start the engine to check the belt.

Fits: platform codes SF, SG

Don't miss

  • Disconnect both batteries before starting.
  • If the alternator sticks, refit bolts to the last 2 turns and tap the heads to free the bushes.
  • Drive bushes (A) back about 4 mm so the alternator fits and clamps properly.
  • Start the engine after completion and check the belt runs true.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
