Removing and installing airbag coil connector and return ring with slip ring F138 — AUDI
Removing and installing airbag coil connector and return ring with slip ring F138 on Audi: 19 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check.
Removing and installing the airbag coil connector and return ring with slip ring F138 on the Audi A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011). Unusually, the battery is disconnected with the ignition switched on for this job, then the driver airbag and steering wheel come off. On cars with electric column adjustment the lower dash panel cover is removed as well. The steering column switch trims are held by bolts that need the special screwdriver; an older version of that tool has to be sanded down at the marked points before it will fit. With the trims off, the connector at the top of the slip ring is unplugged and the retaining hooks are released gently. On refitting, every hook and connector must click home before the trims go back.
🧭 Before you start
Switch on the ignition, remove the luggage compartment floor trim and disconnect the battery earth. Remove the driver airbag, steering wheel and, where fitted, the lower dash panel cover. Undo the trim bolts with the special screwdriver, open the column adjustment and remove both trim sections. Unplug the slip ring connector, release the hooks and detach it, then refit with all hooks engaged and reassemble trims, steering wheel and airbag.
Fits: Audi A6 C6 (4F, 2004–2011)

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
