Draining fuel tank with defective fuel delivery unit: Audi A8 D2 (AFB, AKE, AKF, AKN)

Step-by-step draining fuel tank with defective fuel delivery unit for the Audi A8 D2: 8 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

When the fuel delivery unit has failed, the tank cannot be pumped out the usual way, so on the vehicles with the platform code listed below and engine codes AFB, AKE, AKF and AKN it is emptied through the sender openings instead. The tank has two chambers, each with its own fuel gauge sender. The right-hand sender G comes out first and that chamber is drained with fuel extractor VAS 5190, then the left-hand sender 2 G169 is removed and the left chamber drained the same way. Both senders then go back in. What matters here is safety and cleanliness: fuel vapour, no ignition sources, clean openings so no dirt enters the tank, and both chambers emptied, not just one.

8 steps 4 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Follow the safety and cleanliness rules, remove the right fuel gauge sender G and extract all fuel from the right chamber with VAS 5190 through its opening. Remove the left sender 2 G169 and drain the left chamber the same way. Refit both senders.

Fits: Audi A8 D2 (4D)

Don't miss

  • Drain both chambers; each has its own sender opening.
  • Keep the sender openings and seals clean so no dirt enters the tank.
  • Observe fuel safety precautions: ventilation, no ignition sources, extractor earthed.
  • Check sender seals are seated correctly when refitting to avoid fuel smell or leaks.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
