📋 Procedure

Perform check if:

Final control diagnosis or
Electrical check indicates faults in or between gearbox and automatic gearbox control unit -J217.

Test requirements

Ignition off
Only connect test box V.A.G 1598/20 to 88-pin connector of gearbox wiring harness

Take measurements with test box V.A.G 1598/20 from outside vehicle

Remove noise insulation.
Remove holder -1- for noise insulation.

Checking wiring to 16-pin connector at gearbox

Twist bayonet lock -4- of 16-pin connector to release from gearbox.

Check for continuity in wiring by applying portable multimeter V.A.G 1526A or V.A.G 1715 between contacts of 16-pin connector and sockets of test box V.A.G 1598/20. Refer to table below for resistances.

Connector contact · Test box V.A.G 1598/20, socket · Specification · Measures if reading does not match specification
1 · 42 · ≤ 1.5 ω · - Use current flow diagram to eliminate open circuit in wiring
2 · 5 · ≤ 1.5 ω · Check connector for:
3 · 1 · ≤ 1.5 ω · - Contact corrosion
4 · 32 · ≤ 1.5 ω · - Ingress of water
5 · 16 · ≤ 1.5 ω · - Leakage
6 · 44 · ≤ 1.5 ω
7 · 29 · ≤ 1.5 ω
8 · 30 · ≤ 1.5 ω
9 · 33 · ≤ 1.5 ω
10 · 14 · ≤ 1.5 ω
11 · 4 · ≤ 1.5 ω
12 · 52 · ≤ 1.5 ω
13 · 22 · ≤ 1.5 ω

Connector contact · Test box V.A.G 1598/20, socket · Specification · Measures if reading does not match specification
14 · 21 · ≤ 1.5 ω
15 / Contact not used · - · - Use current flow diagram to eliminate open circuit in wiring
16 · 53 · ≤ 1.5 ω · - Check connector

Notes:

Wiring harness in gearbox must be checked if this wiring check does not reveal any impermissible deviations

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
