📋 Procedure

Test requirements:

Battery voltage at least 12.7 V

Fuse S17 OK (in fuse box)
Fuel pump relay OK; checking => Page
25-6
Fuel pump OK; checking

=> Repair Group 20
K-Jetronic/TCI-H ignition system

Fuel filter OK
Pressure gauge V.A.G 1318 connected with test adapter 1318/4
=> Page
25-58

Attention:
Fuel system is pressurised. Wrap cloth around joint before opening system. Then dissipate pressure by carefully unfastening joint.
Checking and adjusting system pressure

Close cut-off valve of pressure gauge V.A.G 1318 -position B-.
Start engine and let it idle.
Specification: 5.2 ... 5.9 bar

If reading does not match specification:

Adjust system pressure by fitting or taking out shims -1-.
To increase system pressure: Use thicker or several shims
To reduce system pressure: Use thinner or fewer shims
Change in pressure per 0.5 mm shim thickness: approx. 0.3 bar

Note:

To dissipate pressure, detach control pressure pipe at warm-up regulator (large connection).

Attention:
Fuel system is pressurised. Wrap cloth around joint before opening system. Then dissipate pressure by carefully unfastening joint.
Unfastening fuel supply pipe causes pressure container to be drained - approx. 10 cm of fuel squirts out.

Repeat test.

If reading still does not match specification:

A - System pressure too low

Fuel pipe kinked, clogged or leaking
Fuel accumulator leaking
Fuel filter clogged
Inadequate fuel pump delivery

=> Repair Group 20
K-Jetronic/TCI-H ignition system

System pressure regulator/pressure relief valve defective or dirty
Fuel distributor defective

B - System pressure too high

Fuel return pipe kinked or clogged
System pressure regulator/pressure relief valve defective

Checking holding pressure

Test requirements:

Coolant temperature at least 80 °C
System pressure OK

Start engine and let it idle.
Open cut-off valve of pressure gauge V.A.G 1318 -position A-.
Switch off engine after reaching specified value.
Specification: 3.4 ... 3.8 bar

Check holding pressure on gauge.
After 10 minutes pressure must still be at least 3.3 bar

If holding pressure drops below 3.3 bar:

Non-return valve in fuel pump defective:

=> Repair Group 20
K-Jetronic/TCI-H ignition system

Fuel pipes to fuel distributor leaking
System pressure regulator/pressure relief valve leaking
Cold start valve and injectors leaking
Fuel distributor and pipe connections leaking

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
