Checking Motronic current supply relay J271: Audi A3 1.8 (ARX, ARY, AUM, AUQ, …)

Step-by-step checking Motronic current supply relay J271 for the Audi A3 1.8: 22 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is a test procedure, not a parts swap: it establishes whether the Motronic current supply relay J271 on the Audi A3 1996–2003 (8L) with the listed turbocharged engines is actually at fault before it is renewed. The engine cover comes off and the 4-pin connector is unplugged at an ignition coil so a multimeter can be connected on the voltage range and read with the ignition on and off. The relay itself sits beneath the cover on the left at the bulkhead; it is detached so its supply and the wiring to it can be checked against the current flow diagram for open circuits. The last stage puts the test box V.A.G 1598/31 on the engine control unit harness, without the control unit connected, to check the wiring for open circuit and shorts to earth or positive. Only when the wiring passes is the relay renewed.

🧭 Before you start

Engine cover off, 4-pin connector unplugged at an ignition coil, multimeter on the voltage range: readings are taken with the ignition on, then off. The relay is detached from beneath the cover at the left of the bulkhead, its voltage supply is measured and the connections traced on the current flow diagram, with any open circuit repaired. The checks marked with a dot are worked through, then the test box is connected to the engine control unit harness (control unit disconnected) to check for open circuit and short to earth or positive. If the wiring is sound, the relay is renewed.

Fits: Audi A3 (8L, 1996–2003)

  • Special tools named: V.A.G 1598/31

Don't miss

  • Switch the ignition off before detaching the relay or connecting the test box.
  • Connect the test box to the harness only, never with the engine control unit plugged in.
  • Repair any open circuit or short in the wiring before condemning the relay.
  • Renew J271 only after the supply and wiring checks pass.
  • Work from the current flow diagram with the multimeter on the voltage range, not by guesswork.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
