and select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from list. Ignition must be on.
Initiate final control diagnosis and actuate glow plug relay
=> Page
01-44
.
Glow plug relay pick-up must be heard and felt; LED must light
Terminate function "03 - Final control diagnosis" by touching ◂ key.
Touch "06 - End output".
Switch off ignition.
A - If relay does not pick up:
Check power supply of glow plug relay => Page
28-7
.
Check actuation of glow plug relay => Page
28-7
.
B - If relay is energized but LED does not light:
Remove relay (socket 6) from central electrics underneath dash panel on driver's side.
Check wiring from relay socket terminal 30/87 via fuse for glow plugs S39 (in electronics box in footwell on passenger side) to glow plugs.
Check power supply of glow plug relay => Page

Checking power supply of glow plug relay
Connect up multimeter to measure voltage at contact 32/30 of relay socket and earth.
Specification: approx. battery voltage
Connect up multimeter to measure voltage at contact 28/15 of relay socket and earth.
Switch on ignition.
Specification: approx. battery voltage
Switch off ignition.
If readings do not match specifications:
Replace central electrics.
Checking switched earth connection of glow plug relay
Voltage supply to glow plug relay -J51 OK
Reinsert relay.
With ignition switched off, use adapter V.A.G 1598/5 to connect test box V.A.G 1598A to engine control unit connector only (not to control unit) => Page
23-45
.
Use leads from adapter set V.A.G 1594 A to jumper contacts 8 and 18 at test box.
Switch on ignition.
Glow plug relay (in central electrics underneath dash panel in driver's side footwell, socket 6) must pick up
If relay now picks up, but not during final control diagnosis:
Replace engine control unit => Page
23-48
.
If relay does not pick up:
Switch off ignition.
Disconnect cable jumper.
Remove relay (socket 6) from central electrics underneath dash panel on driver's side.
Check for open circuit and short to earth/positive in the following wiring:
Central electrics underneath dash panel on driver's side, socket 6 · Test box V.A.G 1598 A
Contact · Socket
29/S · 8
Use current flow diagram to eliminate open circuit in wiring/short circuit.
If no fault is found:
Replace glow plug relay.
Reconnect engine control unit.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
