Automatic gearbox 097 — Removing and installing gearbox — AUDI
Automatic gearbox 097 — Removing and installing gearbox on Audi: 88 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: platform code 8G
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: V.A.G 1359/2, 17 mm ring spanner
- Renewed: self-locking nuts
Don't miss
- Support hooks and locking pins on lifting tackle must be secured with retainers (arrows) in illustration-. — Pre-tension spindle on support bracket10 - 222 A.
- Mark direction of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tip pen. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it.
- When removing the bolts, note their lengths and positions so that they can be re-fitted correctly.
- Mark connectors (1) to (3) on back of gearbox for renewed installation and unplug/pull off.
- Slackening off of lower heat shield bolt requires shortening (grinding) of an angled hexagon key.
📋 Procedure
- Obtain radio code on vehicles with coded radio.
- With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
- Set up support bracket10 - 222 A on wing mounting flanges. Spindle faces to the front.
- Pre-tension spindle on support bracket10 - 222 A.

- Detach crankcase breather hoses (1) and (3) at cylinder heads.
- Detach vacuum hose (2) from throttle valve housing.
- Unbolt air duct (4) and press it to rear.
- Detach air duct.
- Detach air hose leading to air cleaner housing.
- Detach crankcase breather hose (1) at right cylinder head cover.
- Unbolt variable intake manifold changeover valve N156(2) and place it on intake manifold (hoses remain connected).
- Carefully pull off vacuum hose (4).
- Disconnect hose (5) to brake servo and release non-return valve from bracket.
- Unscrew bolts (3) and detach air duct from throttle valve housing.
- Pull left crankcase breather hose off air duct.
- Slacken off bolt (2) and pull ATF filler pipe (top) (3) off ATF filler pipe (bottom) (5).
- Seal ATF filler pipe (bottom) with clean, lint-free cloth.
- Unscrew engine/gearbox securing bolts accessible from above.
- Set up support bracket10 - 222 A on wing mounting flanges. Spindle faces to the front.
- Remove eye of lifting tackle2024 A. Reinsert pin (1) in centre hole in lifting tackle and secure with split pin.
- Hook pin on lifting tackle2024 A onto spindle of support bracket10 - 222 A.
- Attach lifting tackle2024 A at front right and rear left of engine; to do so, unplug spark plug connectors of cylinders 1 and 6.
- ⚠ Support hooks and locking pins on lifting tackle must be secured with retainers (arrows) in illustration-. — Pre-tension spindle on support bracket10 - 222 A.
- Unbolt cover for poly V-belt (arrows). [Note: Mark direction of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tip pen. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it.]
- Swivel tensioner in direction of arrow with 17 mm ring spanner to slacken off poly V-belt.
- Lock tensioner by inserting locking pin3204 into locating holes (arrows).
- Take out poly V-belt.
- Swivel tensioner in direction of arrow with 10 mm hexagon socket to slacken off poly V-belt.
- Lock tensioner by inserting locking pin3204 into locating holes (1) and (2).
- Take out poly V-belt.
- Unscrew engine/gearbox securing bolts accessible from above. [Note: When removing the bolts, note their lengths and positions so that they can be re-fitted correctly.]
- Remove front wheels.
- Detach noise insulation (arrows).
- Remove bolts (2) and (3) and remove bracket for noise insulation.
- Remove bolt (1) for ATF pipe.
- If fitted, detach cross member beneath exhaust system (arrows).
- Unscrew exhaust pipe(s) (front) at exhaust manifold.
- Unscrew bracket(s) for exhaust system at gearbox.
- Remove front part of exhaust system 26.
- Remove heat shield for multi-function switch.
- Mark connectors (1) to (3) on back of gearbox for renewed installation and unplug/pull off.
- Unplug speedometer connector at gearbox.
- If fitted, unplug connector at engine speed sender on torque converter bellhousing.
- Unhook cable holder for procon-ten system at gearbox and press cables upwards.
- Remove heat shield for drive shaft (right-side). [Note: Slackening off of lower heat shield bolt requires shortening (grinding) of an angled hexagon key.]
- Detach drive shaft (left/right) from gearbox 40.
- Tie-up drive shafts onto body as high as possible.
- Remove bolt (2).
- Slacken nut (1).
- Move alternator to side and unscrew wiring.
- Detach alternator.
- Detach wiring (1) and (2) at starter.
- Unscrew starter retaining bolts/nut (arrows) from gearbox side and detach starter. [Note: Fig. shows 6-cylinder engine. When disconnecting ATF pipes observe rules for cleanliness when working on automatic gearbox .Clean connections of ATF pipes before disconnecting.Note routing of ATF pipes .]
- Place container under the gearbox.
- Detach ATF pipes at joints (A).
- Unbolt bracket (B) and move ATF pipes aside.
- Using 15 mm socket Matra V/175, unscrew 3 nuts from torque converter through opening for starter (rotate crankshaft 1/3 turn for each nut). [Note: To slacken the torque converter nuts, counter-hold the main bolt on the vibration damper.]
- To remove automatic gearbox 097 set up gearbox support3282 with adjustment plate3282/3 and place on engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A. [Note: Symbols on adjustment plate indicate mounts required for automatic gearbox 097; arrow points in direction of travel.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
