Mercedes-Benz M272 platform M272 — 3.5L V6 24V DOHC VVT (variable valve timing both banks) Engine
3.5L V6 24V DOHC VVT (variable valve timing both banks) · 170-272 hp · 240-350 Nm
The M272 is Mercedes-Benz's V6 petrol with 24 valves, twin cams per bank and variable valve timing on both banks, built 2004-2011 in sizes up to 3.5 litres and outputs from 170 to 272 hp. It was used across the C, E, S, SLK, CLK, CLS, ML, GL and R-Class ranges. The defining fault on early engines is wear of the balance shaft sprocket, which leads to cam-crank correlation codes and, if left, timing failure; the oil pump drive sprocket is linked to it. Other visits are sludged VVT solenoids, swirl flap actuator failure, stripped spark plug threads and weeping coolant crossover pipe O-rings. Torque figures cover the cylinder head, crank pulley, camshaft adjusters, spark plugs, main bearing caps and balance shaft module, with factory specifications.
On cam-crank correlation codes, check the engine build date and inspect the balance shaft sprocket before assuming solenoids, since early engines carry the weak gear. Live data on all four cams helps separate a blocked solenoid screen from adjuster wear; clean the screen and retest first. Coolant loss without a puddle calls for a pressure test and dye check under the intake manifold before head gaskets are discussed.
Check first
- Engine build date from the block stamp; early engines carry the original gear design.
- Cam actual against target position; drift beyond about 2 degrees needs attention.
- Coolant crossover pipe under the intake plenum, pressure-tested to 1.4 bar.
- Swirl flap blades by borescope when P2004 or P2006 is logged.
- Full timing set fitted whenever the balance shaft gears are replaced.
- Oil to MB 229.5, changed every 10000 km.

Common torque specifications
| Crank Pulley Bolt | 150 Nm + 90° angle (TTY — replace bolt on removal, MB A0009900172) unconfirmed |
|---|---|
| Camshaft Adjuster Bolt | 100 Nm (per bank, both intake and exhaust cam adjusters — use new bolts, thread-lock not required if new bolt used) unconfirmed |
| Spark Plugs | 25 Nm — use calibrated torque wrench only, no impact gun; apply small amount of copper anti-seize to threads unconfirmed |
| Main Bearing Caps | Stage 1: 20 Nm; Stage 2: 90° angle — TTY, replace bolts on removal unconfirmed |
| Balance Shaft Module Bolts | 10 Nm (M6 fasteners securing module to block — do not overtorque, aluminum threads) unconfirmed |
Figures marked unconfirmed could not be cross-checked against a workshop source. Verify against the vehicle’s own documentation before tightening.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
