B58 engine — BMW 3.0 (3L I6 24V DOHC Twin-scroll Turbo Valvetronic VANOS)
3L I6 24V DOHC Twin-scroll Turbo Valvetronic VANOS · 258-387 hp · 400-500 Nm
The B58 is BMW's 3-litre turbocharged straight-six from the B-series modular family, with twin-scroll turbo, Valvetronic and VANOS, in production since 2015 at 258-387 hp. It powers the G20 M340i, G30 540i, G01 X3 and G02 X4 M40i, G05 X5 40i, G29 Z4 M40i and the Toyota GR Supra A90 3.0. Visits usually involve the high-pressure fuel pump on early builds, the Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor causing limp mode and rough idle, and the plastic charge pipe cracking at the elbow with P0299 underboost. Electric water pump and wastegate actuator replacements need calibration afterwards. Torque figures here cover the cylinder head bolts, crank pulley bolt, main bearing caps, camshaft bearing cap bolts and turbocharger-to-manifold nuts.
For lean codes and hard hot starts, pressure-test the low-pressure circuit first, at 5.0-6.5 bar at idle, before condemning the high-pressure pump. Flat power with P0299 points to the charge pipe elbow. Limp mode with Valvetronic faults calls for checking the eccentric shaft sensor and oil contamination. As good practice, confirm any replaced water pump or wastegate actuator was calibrated.
Check first
- Low-pressure fuel circuit: check 5.0-6.5 bar at idle before blaming the HPFP.
- Charge pipe: inspect the turbo-to-intercooler elbow for cracks on P0299.
- Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor: oil contamination causes limp mode and rough idle.
- Electric water pump: must be programmed after fitting.
- Wastegate actuator: run the teach-in after replacement.
- Oil: 5W-30 to BMW LL-04 at 10000 km.

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
