Removing balancer shaft module — VW

Removing balancer shaft module on VW: 9 steps, engines CAYC, CBAA, CBAB, CBAC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing the balancer shaft module, which carries the oil pump, on the TDI engines listed below (CAYC, CBAA through CLLA) on the A32 platform code is a sump-off job with one hard rule: the crankshaft is only ever turned in the engine's direction of rotation, because a backwards turn can make the toothed belt jump. The vibration damper is removed and the crankshaft is turned at the toothed belt pulley bolt to TDC, where it is locked with crankshaft stop T10050; the stop only fits from the face end of the splines. With the sump off the module bolts are undone in sequence from the highest number down to 1, and the module comes away with the oil pump. The steps then branch depending on whether the old module goes back in or a new one is fitted.

🧭 Before you start

Pull the oil dipstick and remove the vibration damper. Turn the crankshaft at the toothed belt pulley bolt, in the direction of engine rotation only, until it stands at TDC and lock it with crankshaft stop T10050. Remove the sump, undo the module bolts in sequence from the highest number down to 1 and lift the balancer shaft module out together with the oil pump. The steps then split between refitting a used module and fitting a new one.

Fits: platform code A32

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job

Don't miss

  • Turn the crankshaft only in the engine's direction of rotation; risk of the toothed belt jumping.
  • Lock the crankshaft at TDC with stop T10050, pushed on from the face end of the splines.
  • Undo the module bolts in the numbered sequence, highest to 1.
  • Decide beforehand whether the old module is being reused or a new one fitted; the follow-on steps differ.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
