Removing and installing the fuel tank (CAYA, CAYB, CAYC) — VW

Removing and installing the fuel tank (CAYA, CAYB, CAYC) on VW: 25 steps, engines CAYA, CAYB, CAYC. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Removing the fuel tank on the Polo 6R (2009–2014) with the CAYA, CAYB and CAYC engines means taking the rear axle out first, which makes it a bigger job than the tank alone suggests. Inside, the seat bench folds forward, the cover over the fuel delivery unit comes off and its connector is checked and unplugged, and the tank is drained. The filler neck area is cleaned and sealed. Underneath, with the vehicle secured against tipping, the rear axle, right wheel housing liner, rear silencer and heat shield are removed, the supply and return lines are disconnected, and the tank is lowered on a jack after its securing bolts are out. Line clips and filler neck seating need checking at the end.

25 steps 3 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Disconnect the battery, unplug the delivery unit, drain the tank and seal the filler neck. Secure the car on the hoist, remove the rear axle, wheel housing liner, silencer and heat shield, disconnect the fuel lines and filler neck bolts, support the tank and remove bolts 1 to 5. Lower it while guiding by hand. Refit with the filler neck correctly located, tighten the bolts, refit the axle and check the lines are clipped on.

Fits: VW Polo 6R (2009–2014)

Don't miss

  • Secure the vehicle on the hoist before undoing subframe bolts; it can tip with the axle out.
  • Check the delivery unit connector by pulling it without pressing the catch before removal.
  • Seal the filler neck opening with a clean plug to keep dirt out.
  • After fitting, confirm supply, return and breather lines are still clipped to the tank.
  • Obtain the radio anti-theft code before disconnecting the battery if one is fitted.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
