Removing and installing poly V-belt (vehicles with idler pulley) — VW

Removing and installing poly V-belt (vehicles with idler pulley) on VW: 10 steps, engines CFWA. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This covers the poly V-belt on the Polo 6R (chassis 6R1) with the CFWA engine, where the belt is not tensioned by a spring tensioner but by an idler pulley that slides in a guide on the ancillary bracket. After the noise insulation is off, the idler pulley bolt is backed off until the belt can be lifted away. On refitting, the guide surfaces of the idler pulley are coated with lubricating paste, the belt is routed over the pulleys and the idler is put back with its bolt into the guide, then the bolt is tightened in 5 stages. The points that matter are that alternator and compressor are tight before the belt goes on, and that the belt runs the right way and sits squarely in every groove.

10 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Remove the noise insulation, slacken the idler pulley bolt and take the belt off. Paste the idler guide surfaces, fit the belt on the pulleys, insert the idler with its bolt into the ancillary bracket guide and tighten the bolt in 5 stages. Turn the engine at least one turn at the crankshaft pulley bolt, start it to check the belt runs true, then refit the noise insulation.

Fits: VW Polo 6R (2009–2014)

Don't miss

  • Coat the idler pulley guide surfaces with lubricating paste before refitting.
  • Check alternator and air conditioning compressor are secured tightly before the belt goes on.
  • Observe the direction of belt rotation and check it seats properly in every pulley.
  • Tighten the idler bolt in 5 stages, not in one pull.
  • Turn the engine over by hand at least one turn, then run it and watch the belt.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
