Removing and installing fuel tank 2 from and to mounting, natural gas tanks made of composite material — VW

Removing and installing fuel tank 2 from and to mounting, natural gas tanks made of composite material on VW: 36 steps, engines CPWA.

Separating natural gas tank 2 from its mounting on Golf VII and Golf VII Variant (codes 5G1 and BA5) with the CPWA engine, where the tanks are made of composite material. The tanks and mounting are first lowered off the car as one unit on the engine and gearbox jack, then turned upside down on a protected workbench. Before undoing the securing straps, measure their position (dimension a) so they go back in the same place. The straps are slightly under tension, so a second mechanic spreads them while the tank is guided out. Composite tanks must not sit without pressure for long, and any surface damage is a concern. On refitting, the tanks are aligned to each other with straightedge VAS 6075 resting flat on the shut-off valves.

36 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Lower both tanks with the mounting, place them upside down on the bench and measure the strap positions. Undo the strap bolts and, with help, spread the straps to take the tank out. Fit new strap pads, seat the straps in their guides, insert the tanks and align them with the straightedge, then tighten the straps alternately and check clearance.

Fits: VW Golf VII Variant (BA), VW Golf VII (5G, 2012–2020)

  • Renewed: securing strap pads

Don't miss

  • Renew securing strap pads after each removal.
  • Measure strap position (dimension a) before undoing anything to make refitting easier.
  • If both tanks come out or the mounting is renewed, natural gas tank 1 goes back in first.
  • The strap torque applies only to an empty tank.
  • Do not leave composite tanks unpressurised for long; refit a removed shut-off valve immediately.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
