Removing and installing engine control unit J623 with protective housing (Golf Plus, Touran) — VW
Removing and installing engine control unit J623 with protective housing (Golf Plus, Touran) on VW: 22 steps, 2 torque figures, engines CAVA, CAVB, CAVC.
Workshop procedure for VW — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🧭 Before you start
Fits: VW Touran I (1T, 2003–2015); platform code 521
Don't miss
- The shear-head bolt threads are coated with locking compound. Heating the shear-head bolt with a hot air blower releases the locking effect of the locking compound.
- The readiness code must be generated if the event memory has been cleared.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts (arrows) |
| 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) | Tighten securing bolts (arrows) |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove plenum chamber bulkhead General body repairs50Body - front; Plenum chamber bulkhead. [Note: The shear-head bolt threads are coated with locking compound. Heating the shear-head bolt with a hot air blower releases the locking effect of the locking compound.]
- ⚠ Cover lines, cables, connections and control units in the vicinity of the engine control unit to prevent damage through heat. — Turn potentiometer for temperature adjustment (2) to maximum heater output (600°C).
- Set two-stage switch for air flow rate (3) to position 3.
- ⚠ When shear-head bolts are heated up, parts of the protective housing will be subjected to a large amount of heat. Wear protective gloves to avoid injury. — Move nozzle of hot air blower towards shear-head bolt.
- Switch hot air blower on and heat bolt for approx. 20 to 25 seconds.
- Unscrew shear-head bolt using grip pliers on bolt head.
- Then loosen securing nuts (arrows) of control unit bracket.
- Release connectors from engine control unit and pull off.
- Press catches (1) and (2) outwards. Then pull engine control unit off control unit bracket in (direction of arrow).
- Push engine control unit onto control unit bracket until it engages in catch.
- Attach connectors to engine control unit and lock.
- Tighten bolts (arrows) to 10 Nm. — 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft)
- Fit cover of protective housing.
- Evenly tighten new shear-head bolts (arrows) until bolt heads shear off.
- Install plenum chamber bulkhead General body repairs50Body - front; Plenum chamber bulkhead.
- If engine control unit J623 is renewed, erase learnt values and adapt engine control unit "“Guided functions”".
- Read event memory, rectify any faults and then clear event memory "“Guided Fault Finding”".
- Install plenum chamber bulkhead General body repairs50Body - front; Plenum chamber bulkhead.
- The readiness code must be generated if the event memory has been cleared.
- Perform road test.
- Again read control unit event memory.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
