Removing and installing camshaft adjuster (cylinder bank 2) — VW

Removing and installing camshaft adjuster (cylinder bank 2) on VW: 25 steps, 1 torque figure, engines BDN, BDP.

Removing and refitting the camshaft adjusters on cylinder bank 2 for engine codes BDN and BDP, platform codes listed below. This is done with the engine out of the car. With the bank 2 cylinder head cover off, the crankshaft is set to TDC No. 1 cylinder and locked with clamping bolt 3242, and camshaft bar T10068 A goes into both camshaft grooves. The critical step is marking the chain: each adjuster carries a B2 marking and arrow, and the chain link opposite it is painted, carefully, because those paint marks are the only reference on reassembly. The adjusters are loosened while the camshafts are counterheld, the chain tensioner is pressed down and locked with an Allen key, and the adjusters come off.

🧭 Before you start

With the engine removed, take off the bank 2 head cover, set TDC No. 1 cylinder, lock the crankshaft and fit the camshaft bar. Paint the chain links opposite the B2 marks, loosen the adjuster bolts, lock the chain tensioner and remove the adjusters. Refit each adjuster with its mark aligned to the paint, using new bolts hand-tight, remove the bar and tighten to 60 Nm + 90° while counterholding the camshaft with a 32 mm spanner.

Fits: VW Passat B5 (3B)

  • Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job

Don't miss

  • Mark the chain link opposite each B2 arrow with paint before loosening anything.
  • Turn the Hall sender wheel to its stop and hold it while fitting the inlet and exhaust adjusters.
  • Use new securing bolts for the camshaft adjusters.
  • Tighten adjuster bolts to 60 Nm + 90° with the camshaft counterheld at the 32 mm flats.
  • The angle can be applied in several stages.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove engine .
  2. Remove cylinder head cover of cylinder bank 2 .
  3. Position crankshaft at TDC No. 1 cylinder. Marking (1) must align with cylinder block joint (2).
  4. Remove sealing plug from left side of cylinder block.
  5. Screw clamping bolt3242 into hole so that crankshaft is secured against turning.

  1. Insert camshaft bar T10068 A in both shaft grooves. [Note: The grooves of the camshafts might not be exactly vertical due to the function of camshaft adjusters. Therefore, move the camshafts back and forth slightly if necessary when inserting the camshaft bar T10068 A using an open jaw spanner.]
  2. Remove cover for camshaft cylinder bank 2.
  3. There is a marking "“B2”" and an "“arrow”" on the inlet camshaft adjuster. Mark the chain link opposite the marking with paint. [Note: Marking the chain links must be carried out very carefully, because this is important for installing the camshaft adjusters. The position of copper links of the camshaft timing chain can be disregarded.]
  4. There is a marking "“B2”" and an "“arrow”" on the exhaust camshaft adjuster. Mark the chain link opposite the marking with paint.
  5. Remove camshaft bar T10068 A from camshafts.
  6. Loosen securing bolts of camshaft adjuster, for this counterhold camshafts with an open jaw spanner.
  7. Insert camshaft bar T10068 A into grooves in both shafts again.
  8. Press down chain tensioner for timing chain cylinder bank 2 (left side) and lock in place using Allen key (A).
  9. Remove camshaft adjusters from camshafts. If necessary, move the camshafts back and forth slightly with an open jaw spanner.
  10. Turn Hall sender wheel (1) in (direction of arrow) to stop and hold.
  11. Insert inlet camshaft adjuster in timing chain so that marking (1) and the coloured marking align.
  12. Fit inlet camshaft adjuster onto camshaft. If necessary, move the camshaft back and forth slightly with an open jaw spanner.
  13. Tighten new securing bolt for camshaft adjuster hand-tight.
  14. Turn Hall sender wheel (1) in (direction of arrow) to stop and hold.
  15. Insert exhaust camshaft adjuster in timing chain so that marking (1) and the coloured marking align.
  16. Fit exhaust camshaft adjuster onto camshaft. If necessary, move the camshaft back and forth slightly with an open jaw spanner.
  17. Tighten new securing bolt for camshaft adjuster hand-tight.
  18. Remove camshaft bar T10068 A from camshafts.
  19. Counterhold with open jaw spanner 32 mm at camshaft and tighten securing bolts for camshaft adjusters to 60 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn further). (Turning further can be done in several stages). — 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) + 90°
  20. Reinstall cover .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
