Timing belt replacement: VW Polo3 1.6 (AJV)

Step-by-step timing belt replacement for the VW Polo3 1.6 (AJV): 92 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

Renewing the timing belt on the Polo3 GTI 1.6 16V with the AJV engine means supporting the engine and taking off the engine mount, because the belt has to pass it. Check the audio security code before the battery is disconnected. The air filter housing and hoses, ancillary drive belt and crankshaft pulley come off, then the lower timing belt cover. The crankshaft is set to TDC for cylinder 1, the camshaft locking tool fitted and the timing marks checked before the belt is removed, and the second belt is dealt with too. Two points carry the job: the tensioner base plate cut-out must engage over its securing bolt, and the new belt must not be bent, twisted or stretched.

92 steps 1 engine code

🧭 Before you start

Note the radio code, support the engine and remove the air filter housing, ancillary belt and crankshaft pulley. Remove the lower timing cover, set TDC for cylinder 1, lock the camshaft and check the marks. Remove the belts, then fit the new timing belt and set the tensioner by pushing the pulley against the belt and turning it clockwise with the base plate engaged. Tighten the tensioner, remove the camshaft locking tool, refit the crankshaft pulley and engine mount, and turn the engine in its normal direction to recheck the marks.

Fits: VW Jetta VI (16, 2010–2018); platform codes GTI, (1.6

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
