Installing and adjusting balancer shaft module with oil pump — VW
Installing and adjusting balancer shaft module with oil pump on VW: 12 steps, 2 torque figures, engines CDLG.
Fitting the balancer shaft module together with the oil pump is part of the bottom-end assembly on the CDLG petrol engine in the Golf VI (5K1, 2008–2013). The intermediate plate sits on the module's dowel sleeves, the oil pump, module and plate go on as one unit, and the new bolts are tightened in three stages from the inside outwards. The adjustment is what matters: with the engine at TDC No. 1, the marking on the balancer shaft chain sprocket must line up with the fixing hole and be locked with pin T10027 before the chain is laid on. The oil pump sprocket only fits one way, and only the oil pump may be turned to get it there. Get the timing wrong and the balancer shafts will add vibration instead of cancelling it.
🧭 Before you start
Place the intermediate plate on the dowel sleeves, fit the oil pump with balancer shaft module and plate, and tighten the new bolts hand-tight, then 15 Nm and a further 90° in diagonal sequence from inside out. Set TDC No. 1, align and lock the balancer shaft sprocket with T10027 and lay the chain on. Fit the oil pump sprocket hand-tight, remove the locking pin and Allen key, and tighten the sprocket to 20 Nm plus 90° while counterholding the vibration damper bolt. The sump goes on last.
Fits: VW Golf VI (5K, 2008–2013)
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
Don't miss
- Renew the balancer shaft module bolts; they are torqued and angle-tightened.
- Tighten in diagonal sequence from inside outwards, and note the bolts are different lengths.
- Lock the balancer shaft chain sprocket with locking pin T10027 at TDC No. 1 before fitting the chain.
- The oil pump sprocket fits in one position only; turn the oil pump, never the balancer shafts, to line it up.
- Counterhold on the vibration damper centre bolt while torquing the oil pump sprocket to 20 Nm plus 90°.

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |

| 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) | Tighten bolts |
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Remove locking pin and Allen key (1 |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure
- As shown, place intermediate plate onto balancer shaft module dowel sleeves (arrows).
- Install oil pump with balancer shaft module and intermediate plate. Replace bolts for balancer shaft module.
- Tighten bolts in 3 stages as follows:
- Hand-tighten until stop is reached.
- Tighten bolts to 15 Nm in diagonal sequence, working from inside outwards. — 15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- Tighten 90° further in diagonal sequence, working from inside outwards. [Note: Note different bolt lengths]
- Set engine to TDC No. 1 cylinder.
- Align marking on balancer shaft chain sprocket (arrow) with fixing hole.
- In this position, lock chain sprocket using locking pin T10027. Place chain on balancer shaft chain sprocket.
- Install oil pump chain sprocket and tighten bolt by hand. [Note: The oil pump chain sprocket can only be installed correctly in one position. For installation, only the oil pump may be turned.]
- Remove locking pin T10027 and Allen key (1). Secure oil pump chain sprocket (torque setting: 20 Nm + (90°) further). Counterhold on centre bolt of vibration damper. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Install sump .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
