Checking exhaust gas recirculation valve N18 voltage supply — VW

Checking exhaust gas recirculation valve N18 voltage supply on VW: 11 steps, engines AGD, AHG, AKU. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

This is a test routine, not a repair: checking the voltage supply and wiring to the exhaust gas recirculation valve N18 on the diesel engine codes AGD, AHG and AKU on the platform code listed below. With the connector pulled off the valve, a multimeter between contact 1 and engine ground should show roughly battery voltage with the ignition on. If it does not, the ignition goes off and the control unit side is checked through the adapter cable on the 68-pin harness connector: contact 1 to socket 68 and contact 2 to socket 25 for open circuit, then the other adapter for contact 1 to sockets 2 and 28 and contact 2 to socket 29, plus shorts between lines, to earth and to battery positive. Only when the wiring passes everything is the diesel direct injection control unit J248 renewed.

11 steps 3 engine codes

🧭 Before you start

Pull the connector off the valve and measure between contact 1 and engine ground with the ignition on; the specification is approximately battery voltage. Switch the ignition off, connect the 68-pin adapter cable to the control unit harness and check contact 1 to socket 68 and contact 2 to socket 25 for open circuit per the current flow diagram. Connect the other adapter and check contact 1 to sockets 2 and 28 and contact 2 to socket 29. Check all lines for shorts to each other, to earth and to battery positive; if everything is in order, renew control unit J248.

Fits: platform code 6N1

  • Special tools named: V.A.G 1598/18A

Don't miss

  • Specification at contact 1 with ignition on: approximately battery voltage.
  • Ignition off before connecting the adapter cable to the control unit harness.
  • Open-circuit checks: contact 1 to socket 68, contact 2 to socket 25; then sockets 2 and 28, and 29.
  • Check for shorts between lines, to earth and to battery positive, not just open circuits.
  • Control unit J248 is renewed only after every wiring check passes.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
