📋 Procedure
Preparation and removal
- Remove the engine upper cover
- Note: The engine mount only needs to be removed when renewing the tensioner pulley
- Use the special tool to turn
- Stage 1:
- Loosen the camshaft gearwheel bolt
- High-pressure pump gearwheel locking pin:
- If required, turn the high-pressure fuel pump pulley until the tool can be fitted
- Disconnect the electrical connectors
- Remove the fuel filter unit
- Remove the timing belt upper cover
- Remove the right-hand inner wing splash guard
- Remove the ancillary drive belt
- Engine support bar:
- Attach the engine to the engine support bar
- Removal sequence:
- Remove the engine support
- Remove the engine support bracket
- Note: Raise or lower the engine as required
- Remove the crankshaft pulley
- Note: Use a wrench to counterhold
- Remove the timing belt centre cover
- Remove the coolant pipe support-clip bolt(s)
- Remove the timing belt lower cover
- Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1
- Fit the crankshaft locking tool
- Loosen the camshaft gearwheel bolts slightly
- Remove the coolant pipe support-clip bolt(s)
- Loosen the high-pressure pump gearwheel bolt(s)
- Tensioner pulley nut:
- Loosen the tensioner pulley nut
- Use the special tool
- Turn the tensioner anti-clockwise until the locking pin fits
- Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise
- Idler pulley:
- Remove the timing belt, starting at the idler pulley
Installation and checks
- Hand-tighten one of the bolts to hold the gearwheel
- Use new bolt(s)
- Turn the camshaft and high-pressure pump gearwheels clockwise to the end of their slots
- Fit the timing belt
- Use new bolt(s)
- Note: The engine mount only needs to be removed when renewing the tensioner pulley
- Turn the tensioner clockwise until there is slight contact with the pin
- Tighten the tensioner pulley nut finger-tight
- Use the special tool
- Turn the tensioner clockwise until the pointer is slightly past the centre mark
- Note: The base plate will correct itself once pretension is applied
- Stage 1:
- Tighten the tensioner pulley nut
- Turn the special tool anti-clockwise slightly
- Note: Keep the camshaft gearwheel under tension
- Stage 1:
- Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts
- Stage 2:
- Tighten the high-pressure pump gearwheel bolt(s)
- Use new bolt(s)
- Remove the locking pins
- Remove the crankshaft locking tool
- Turn the engine 2 rotations until just before TDC
- Turn the engine clockwise
- Until the special tool engages
- Camshaft locking pin:
- Check that the camshaft locking pin can be fitted
- Check that the tensioner indicator is centered or no more than 5 mm to the right of the notch on the backplate
- Note: The high-pressure pump will now be difficult to check for the timing point; however, a slight deviation will not affect engine operation
- If the camshaft gearwheel locking tool does not fit
- Remove the crankshaft locking tool
- Turn the crankshaft backwards slightly
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the camshaft locking tool can be fitted
- Loosen the camshaft gearwheel bolts
- Crankshaft locking tool: check the position of the pin
- If it is to the left of the hole:
- Turn the engine clockwise
- Until the special tool engages
- Use the special tool to counterhold
- Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts
- If it is to the right of the hole:
- Turn the crankshaft backwards slightly
- Turn the engine clockwise
- Until the special tool engages
- Use the special tool to counterhold
- Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts
- Remove the camshaft locking pin
- Remove the crankshaft locking tool
- Turn the engine 2 rotations by hand
- Refit the locking tools to check the timing
- Repeat the procedure if required
- Use the special tool to counterhold
- Tighten the camshaft gearwheel bolts
- Stage 2:
- Use the special tool to counterhold
- Tighten the high-pressure pump gearwheel bolt(s)
- If required;
- Installation sequence:
- Refit the engine support bracket
- Use new bolt(s)
- Use new bolt(s)
- Engine support:
- Remove the engine support bar
- Refit the timing belt lower cover
- Stage 2:
- Refit the coolant pipe support bracket
- Use new bolt(s)
- Stage 2:
- Refit the timing belt upper cover
- Reconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector
- Refit the fuel filter unit
- Refit the fuel feed and return lines
- Note: The supply line has white markings; the return line has blue markings
- Reconnect the electrical connector(s)
- Reconnect the fuel lines
- Reconnect the electrical connector(s)
- Stage 1:
- Stage 2:
- Refit the bolts
- Refit the hoses
- Reconnect the fuel feed and return lines
- Refit the front right splash guard

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
