Gearbox removal & installation: Mercedes-Benz W169, W245 M266 (266.920, 266.940, 266.960, 266.980)
Step-by-step gearbox removal & installation for the Mercedes-Benz W169, W245 M266: 78 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
On the A-Class (W169) and B-Class (W245) with the M266 petrol engine, from the 150 to the 200 Turbo including the BlueEFF and NGT versions, the gearbox comes out from underneath after the front subframe has been lowered away. The front wheels and wheel arch liners come off, the drive shaft nuts are loosened, the steering is locked centred and its column bolt released, and the engine is taken on a hoist. Anti-roll bar, track rod ends and lower arm ball joints are disconnected before the subframe is dropped. The catalytic converter, shift cables, reversing light switch and engine/gearbox support follow, the slave cylinder hose is plugged, and the gearbox is lowered on its special support. Afterwards the clutch is bled.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the wheels and arch liners, loosen the drive shaft nuts, lock the steering centred and support the engine on a hoist. Disconnect the anti-roll bar, track rod ends and ball joints, then lower and remove the subframe. Disconnect the catalytic converter, shift cables, reversing light switch and supports, plug the slave cylinder hose, remove the starter and bellhousing bolts and lower the gearbox. Refit in reverse, bleed the clutch and, with automatic clutch, initialise its programmed values.
Fits: platform codes 150, |, 160, BLUEEFF, 170, NGT, 180, 200, TURBO
- Opens: brake fluid
Don't miss
- Lock the steering wheel in the centre position before releasing the steering column bolt.
- Plug the clutch slave cylinder hose as soon as it is disconnected.
- Bleed the clutch at the bleed screw until no bubbles come out.
- Vehicles with automatic clutch need the clutch programmed values initialised with a diagnostic tool.
- Check for stored fault codes once the job is done.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
