Start final control diagnosis and select secondary air pump relay -J299
=> Page
01-53
.
Important note:
The secondary air pump relay is only activated for approx. 10 seconds, so it may be necessary to start final control element diagnosis several times (switch ignition off and back on again).
The secondary air pump relay should pick up and secondary air pump motor -V101 should run. (Relay is located in relay position 2 in 3-way relay carrier in electronics box on left side of plenum chamber).
A - If the relay does not pick up:
Test voltage supply of secondary air pump relay => Page
24-135
.
Test activation of secondary air pump relay => Page
24-138
.
B - If the relay picks up but the secondary air pump motor does not run:

.
Testing voltage supply of secondary air pump relay
Disconnect secondary air pump relay.
Connect multimeter (voltage test range) as follows:
3-way relay carrier (electronics box in plenum chamber) socket position 2: / contact · Test against /
8 · Engine earth
Specification: approx. battery voltage
Note:
The contact cells of the relay carrier in which the contacts are located are numbered on the relay carrier.
If the specification is not obtained:
Carry out the following tests (marked with dots):
Test fuse for secondary air pump relay.
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Test for open circuit in wiring from battery + (terminal 30) to secondary air pump relay -J299 (located in relay position 2 of 3-way relay carrier in electronics box in plenum chamber.)
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Connect multimeter (voltage measurement range) as follows:
3-way relay carrier (electronics box in plenum chamber) socket position 2: / contact · Test against /
4 · Engine earth
Operate starter briefly.
Specification: approx. battery voltage
If the specification is not obtained:
Carry out the following tests (marked with dots):
Test fuse No. S234 (in fuse box, socket 34).
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Test for open circuit in wiring from secondary air pump relay -J299 (contact 4) to fuel pump relay.
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Note:
The contact cells of the relay carrier in which the contacts are located are numbered on the relay carrier.
Testing activation of secondary air pump relay
Switch off ignition.
Disconnect secondary air pump relay.
Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B as follows:
3-way relay carrier (electronics box in plenum chamber) socket position 2: / contact · Test against /
6 · Battery positive
Start final control diagnosis and select secondary air pump relay -J299
=> Page
01-53
.
The LED should light up for about 10 seconds.
If the LED does not light up:
Switch off ignition.
Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness for engine control unit. Do not connect to the engine control unit itself.
=> Page
24-26
.
Note:
The contact cells of the relay carrier in which the contacts are located are numbered on the relay carrier.
Test for open circuit and short to positive or earth in the following wiring connection:
3-way relay carrier (electronics box in plenum chamber) socket position 2: / contact · Test box V.A.G 1598/31 / socket
6 · 72
Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 Ohm
Rectify any open/short circuit as necessary.
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
If no fault is found:
Fit a new secondary air pump relay -J299.
Testing voltage supply to secondary air pump motor
Note:
The secondary air pump motor is located behind the engine noise insulation (right side in direction of travel).
-1-: Connector for secondary air pump motor;
-2-: Secondary air pump motor.
Unplug connector from secondary air pump motor -V101.
Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B between contacts 1 and 2.
Start final control diagnosis and select secondary air pump relay -J299
=> Page
01-53
.
The LED should light up for about 10 seconds.
If the LED does not light up:
Carry out the following tests (marked with dots):
Test for open circuit in wiring from connector for secondary air pump motor -V101 to secondary air pump relay -J299 (located in 3-way relay carrier in electronics box in plenum chamber, socket position 2)
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
Test for open circuit in wiring from connector for secondary air pump motor -V101 to earth connection in engine compartment harness
=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder
If no fault is found, replace secondary air pump relay:
If the LED lights up, but the secondary air pump does not start with connector plugged in (start final control diagnosis again):
Renew secondary air pump motor -V101.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
