📋 Procedure

Note:

When the gear selector lever is in position P or N the drive range sensor (multi-function switch) -F125 on the gearbox switches contact 22 on the engine control unit to earth.
When a gear is engaged the switch is open and there is positive voltage at contact 22 on the engine control unit.

Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552) and select engine electronics control unit with the "Address word" 01. When doing this the engine must be running at idling speed.

Testing wiring

Switch off ignition.
Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 to wiring harness for engine control unit => Page
24-22
.
Connect diode test lamp between contact 3 (terminal 30) and contact 22.

The diode test lamp should go out when a gear is engaged (2, 3, 4, R or D).

Move selector lever to position P or N.

The diode test lamp should light up.

If the diode test lamp does not light up:

Test for open circuit and short to positive or earth in wiring between gearbox control unit and contact 22 on engine control unit.

=> Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations binder

If there are no faults in the wiring, test the drive range sensor (multi-function switch).

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.

Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
