📋 Procedure

01V 01VA
Special tools,
testers and auxiliary items required

Extractor lever VW 681
Thrust pad 3383
Drip tray V.A.G 1306
V.A.G 1358 A Oil extractor

Notes:

A damaged sealing ring allows ATF or gear oil to leak into torque converter bell housing via centre breather of shaft ring.
Furthermore, a damaged sealing ring allows ATF to enter the differential. This is being overfilled and oil leaks at the breather of the differential.

Removing

Bolt drive shaft/wheel hub whilst the vehicle is standing on its wheels.
Remove front wheels.

Unbolt the heat shield for right drive shaft.
Remove drive shafts:

Remove bolt for flange shaft -arrow-. Whilst doing this secure flange shaft with drift against turning.
Extract gear oil from final drive with oil extractor V.A.G 1358 A.
Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 underneath.
Pull out the right flange shaft.
Remove the right gearbox support => Page

.

Unscrew bolts of cover for final drive in the reverse sequence to that shown and remove cover.
Pull out differential and remove.

Manually remove taper roller bearing outer race of differential -1- and shim behind -2- from gearbox housing.

Note:

The shim is fitted and must not be exchanged for a shim with different thickness.

Remove the left flange shaft => Page
39-13
.
Pull out sealing ring.

Note:

The levering tool must be positioned behind the two sealing lips of the sealing ring. Do not position at outer ring of sealing ring as the contact surface in the gearbox housing could be damaged. When levering, guide levering tool carefully.

Installing

Check oil seal seat in gearbox housing for damage and rework, if necessary.
Lightly lubricate outer circumference and sealing lips of seal with ATF.
Slide the double oil seal onto the thrust pad 3383 such that the larger, protruding sealing lip -arrow- of the oil seal faces the tool.

Drive in new seal as far as stop.

Install left flange shaft => Page
39-22
.
Insert shim -2- and taper roller bearing outer race for differential -1- by hand until stop into gearbox housing.

Renew the O-ring -arrow-.
Fit differential into gearbox housing.

Install cover for final drive.

Tightening sequence:

1. Stage 1: Replace bolts -1 ... 3- Tighten by hand
2. Stage 1: Replace bolts -1 ... 12- Tighten in given sequence to tightening torque

Install right flange shaft.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
