Renewing oil seal for rear splined shaft, bevel box installed — AUDI

Renewing oil seal for rear splined shaft, bevel box installed on Audi: 28 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.

On the Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018) with the bevel box in place, this renews the oil seal on the bevel box rear splined shaft. The noise insulation comes off, the exhaust is separated at the clamp with the front pipe tied up, and the subframe with steering rack is removed with its position fixed. The propshaft centre bearing bolts are loosened so the shaft can slide back, and the propshaft is levered off the bevel box with a screwdriver turned through 90° while the engine and gearbox are pushed forward slightly. With the heat shields off, the seal is pierced and pulled out with a self-tapping screw. Guiding the new seal over the shaft chamfer without damaging its lip, and the propshaft circlip engaging on refitting, are what count.

28 steps

🧭 Before you start

Noise insulation, exhaust connection and subframe with steering rack come off first. The propshaft is freed at its centre bearing and pressed off the rear splined shaft, then tied aside, and the heat shields are removed. The old seal is extracted with a self-tapping screw, the new one is greased between its lips, turned on over the chamfer and driven in flush, and its heat shield is driven on to the stop. The propshaft is refitted while a second mechanic pushes the engine and gearbox back until the circlip engages, then the subframe, exhaust and noise insulation are refitted and the bevel box oil level checked.

Fits: Audi A1 (8X, 2010–2018)

  • Opens: gearbox oil

Don't miss

  • The exhaust flexible joint must not be bent beyond 10° or put under tension.
  • Fix the subframe position before removing it so the alignment is kept.
  • Do not screw the self-tapping screw in too far or the bearing behind can be damaged.
  • Turn the new seal over the shaft chamfer so the sealing lip is not damaged.
  • Make sure the circlip on the rear splined shaft engages in the propshaft.

📋 Procedure

  1. Remove noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Removing and installing noise insulation.
  2. ⚠ Risk of damage to flexible joint. The flexible joint must not be bent further than 10°.Do not subject flexible joint to tensile load.Take care not to damage wire mesh on flexible joint. — Remove nuts for clamp (arrow).
  3. Detach exhaust system at clamp and tie up front exhaust pipe.
  4. Remove subframe with steering rack (fix position of subframe when removing) Running gear, axles, steering40Subframe; Removing and installing subframe with steering rack.
  5. Loosen but do not remove bolts with washers (1) securing centre bearing of propshaft to body, and push propshaft as far as possible towards rear.

  1. If necessary, detach heat shield (2) from body so that centre bearing of propshaft on body can be moved.
  2. Apply a suitable plain slot screwdriver with hexagonal shaft (1) between heat shield (2) and propshaft (3).
  3. Press propshaft off bevel box by turning screwdriver 90° (in direction of arrow) with an open-end spanner (4).
  4. Push engine/gearbox assembly forward slightly, and at the same time detach propshaft from rear splined shaft of bevel box.
  5. Tie propshaft to side. [Note: The heat shield (A) for the propshaft is not shown in the following illustrations. The securing bolt (arrow 2) can only be removed if the front exhaust pipe has been removed. The oil seal for the rear splined shaft of bevel box can be renewed with the heat shield (A) installed.]
  6. Remove nuts (arrows) and detach heat shield (1).
  7. Press propshaft off bevel box and tie up Rear final drive39Propshaft; Removing and installing propshaft. [Note: Make sure you do not damage surface coating on propshaft.]
  8. Pry heat shield (4) for oil seal off bevel box. [Note: Items (1 … 3) can be disregarded.]
  9. Place used oil collection and extraction unitVAS 6622A below bevel box.
  10. In order to screw self-tapping screw (arrow) into oil seal, first pierce a hole in oil seal e.g. using a punch.
  11. Screw in self-tapping screw (4 mm diameter) (bottom arrow).
  12. Pull out oil seal. [Note: To avoid damaging the bearing behind, do not screw in the self-tapping screw too far.If the oil seal is fitted very tightly, screw in a second self-tapping screw (top arrow) opposite the first and pull out the oil seal.]
  13. Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip (arrow) half full with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.
  14. Push new oil seal onto seat in bevel box. [Note: To prevent the sealing lip of the new oil seal from being damaged during installation, carefully guide the oil seal over the chamfered surface of the rear splined shaft while turning the oil seal.]
  15. Apply installing tool2003/1 with smooth side towards oil seal.
  16. Drive in oil seal until flush using thrust piece T10143 and installing tool2003/1. Take care to keep oil seal straight when installing.
  17. Drive heat shield (4) for oil seal at bevel box onto stop using thrust piece T10143.
  18. Fit propshaft onto rear splined shaft of bevel box and hold propshaft in this position.
  19. Have a second mechanic push engine/gearbox assembly towards rear until circlip on rear splined shaft engages on propshaft.
  20. Install subframe with steering rack Running gear, axles, steering40Subframe; Removing and installing subframe with steering rack.
  21. Connect exhaust system at clamp 26Exhaust pipes/silencers; Exploded view - silencers.
  22. Check gear oil level in bevel box and top up if necessary .
  23. Install noise insulation General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Exploded view - noise insulation.

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
