Renewing input shaft oil seal, 0BC — AUDI
Renewing input shaft oil seal, 0BC on Audi: 40 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This covers renewing the input shaft (propshaft flange) oil seal on the 0BC rear final drive, which is shared by the platform codes listed below. The job is done in the car. The rear exhaust section is removed with help from a second mechanic, approx. 250 ml of gear oil is drained, and the propshaft is detached from the final drive, lowered at its centre bearing and tied aside between tank and subframe. The cross members and heat shield come off. The flange circlip is removed, the flange position marked against the pinion shaft, and the flange pulled off. The old seal is pierced and drawn out with a self-tapping screw. Marking the flange so the coloured balance dot keeps its position, and a correctly sized circlip, decide the result.
🧭 Before you start
Rear exhaust, underbody cross members and heat shield are removed, some gear oil drained and the propshaft detached and tied aside. The flange is marked, its circlip removed and the flange pulled off with the installing tool. The old seal is pulled out with a screw through a pierced hole, the new one is packed with sealing grease, fitted over its assembly sleeve and driven in straight to its stop. The flange is drawn back on with markings aligned, the propshaft reconnected, the centre bearing secured free of stress, the trims refitted and the final drive oil level checked before the exhaust goes back.
Fits: Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017), Audi A5 Cabriolet (8F), Audi A8 D4 (4H, 2010–2017), Audi A5 (8T, 2007–2016), Audi A4 B8 (8K, 2007–2015), Audi A6/A7 C7 (4G, 2011–2018); platform codes 83, 4X

Don't miss
- Mark the flange against the pinion shaft to keep the coloured dot position and minimise imbalance.
- Renew the circlip with one of the same thickness if it is overstretched or damaged.
- Pack the space between sealing and dust lips half full of sealing grease.
- Check the seal spring sits behind the sealing lip and drive the seal in straight.
- Fit the centre propshaft bearing so it is free of stress, then check the final drive oil level.

📋 Procedure
- Disconnect exhaust system at clamps (1) and (2).
- Remove rear section of exhaust system 26Exhaust pipes/silencers; Exploded view - silencers. [Note: A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.]
- Unscrew gear oil drain plug (arrow) and drain off approx. 250 ml of gear oil.
- Screw in and tighten drain plug (arrow).
- Detach propshaft from rear final drive .
- Guide propshaft downwards between fuel tank and rear subframe and tie up on one side.
- If fitted, remove front cross member (2).
- Remove rear cross member (3) and heat shield (1).
- Remove cross-piece (2)General body repairs, exterior66Underbody trim; Exploded view - underbody trim.
- Remove bolts (arrows) securing centre propshaft bearing.
- Lower propshaft at centre bearing.
- When doing so, guide propshaft downwards between fuel tank and rear subframe.
- Fit bolts (arrows) for centre bearing and hand-tighten.
- Tie propshaft to one side.
- Remove high-temperature grease in propshaft flange on rear final drive.
- Remove circlip (arrow).
- ⚠ Renew circlip with new circlip of same thickness if overstretched or damaged during removal. For correct version, refer to Electronic parts catalogue. — Mark position of flange (B) for propshaft relative to pinion shaft (A)(arrow). [Note: This marking (arrow) is necessary in order to maintain the original position of the coloured dot (C) on the outside of the flange. This is the only effective way to minimise the imbalance in the rear final drive.]
- Screw 2 bolts M 8 x 30(arrow) into flange.
- Pull off propshaft flange using drive flange installing toolVW 391.
- Lay absorbent cloth (A) on subframe under final drive.
- Pierce metal ring of oil seal (A) in direction of (arrow) using e.g. a scriber (B).
- Then screw a self-tapping screw (arrow) into this hole in oil seal (A).
- Pull out oil seal (A) for propshaft flange in direction of (arrow).
- Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing greaseG 052 128 A1.
- Fit new oil seal (A) on assembly sleeve T40222/1. [Note: Check that spring of oil seal behind sealing lip is in installation position.]
- Lightly lubricate outer circumference of oil seal with gear oil.
- Fit assembly sleeve T40222/1 onto pinion shaft (B) together with oil seal (A).
- Push oil seal (A) in as far as it will go.
- Remove assembly sleeve T40222/1.
- Drive in new oil seal onto stop (take care to keep oil seal straight).
- Position propshaft flange (B) on pinion shaft (A) so that markings (arrow) are in line.
- Screw adapterVW 771/40 into threaded hole in pinion shaft.
- Attach counterhold tool3028 to flange for propshaft with bolts (M 8 x 30) (arrows A).
- Secure installing toolVW 391 with bolt (M 8 x 45) (arrow B). At the same time, screw spindle of installing tool into adapterVW 771/40.
- Pull in flange for propshaft as far as stop (counterhold spindle of installing tool with spanner).
- Attach propshaft to rear final drive .
- Secure centre propshaft bearing to body so it is free of stress. Tightening torque
- Install heat shield and cross member General body repairs, exterior66Underbody trim; Exploded view - underbody trim.
- Check oil level in rear final drive .
- Install rear section of exhaust system 26Exhaust pipes/silencers; Exploded view - silencers.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
