🧭 Before you start

Fits: Audi TT Mk2 (8J, 2006–2014)

  • Special tools named: VAS 6222, T10304
  • Renewed: complete steering rack unit

Don't miss

  • Renew the complete steering rack unit if there are signs of corrosion, damage, wear or dirt on the rack. The complete steering rack unit must also be renewed if there is no visible lubricating film on the rack.
  • Do NOT use any other type of grease. — Install hydraulic thrust piece and seal (arrow) by hand.
  • Mark the position of one of the graduations on the adjuster screw relative to the steering rack housing (1).
  • Check that marking of graduation on adjuster screw relative to steering rack housing is still visible. Make new marking if necessary.

🔩 Torque settings

Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.

TorqueFastener / step

ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.

📋 Procedure

  1. Then turn steering evenly back to full left lock using friction gauge, e.g. VAS 6222. Read off torque required to turn steering.
  2. Detach hose clip for rubber boot (left-side) (1) and pull boot off steering rack housing.
  3. Turn steering to straight-ahead position using T10304.
  4. Rotate steering rack on assembly stand so that thrust piece with adjuster screw faces upwards.
  5. Now push rubber boot back onto steering rack housing.
  6. Using 4 mm ∅ bit, drill out 6 peened points until dimension (a) is obtained.
  7. Vacuum out all swarf from steering rack housing using wet and dry cleanerV.A.G 1373 or similar.
  8. Unscrew adjuster screw.
  9. Remove seal (arrow).
  10. Pull rack towards thrust piece to help detach thrust piece.
  11. At the same time, pull hydraulic thrust piece out of steering rack housing using suitable pliers. [Note: Renew the complete steering rack unit if there are signs of corrosion, damage, wear or dirt on the rack. The complete steering rack unit must also be renewed if there is no visible lubricating film on the rack.]
  12. Lubricate new thrust piece (arrow A) (on rack contact surface), seal and aperture in steering rack housing (arrow B) with the grease supplied G 052 192 A1.
  13. ⚠ Do NOT use any other type of grease. — Install hydraulic thrust piece and seal (arrow) by hand.
  14. Tighten new adjuster screw to 40 Nm. — 40 Nm (30 lb-ft)
  15. Peen adjuster screw 6 x (arrows) using a centre punch.
  16. Mark the position of one of the graduations on the adjuster screw relative to the steering rack housing (1).
  17. Unscrew adjuster screw 5.5 graduations anti-clockwise (2).
  18. Tighten adjuster screw once again to 40 Nm. — 40 Nm (30 lb-ft)
  19. Enlarge the 6 peening points using a centre punch.
  20. Check that marking of graduation on adjuster screw relative to steering rack housing is still visible. Make new marking if necessary.
  21. Unscrew adjuster screw 5.5 graduations anti-clockwise.
  22. Using T10304, turn steering from full left lock to full right lock.
  23. Fit rubber boot (left-side) with new hose clip on steering rack housing.
  24. Measure torque required to turn steering.
  25. First turn steering to full right lock (as seen in direction of travel).
  26. Then turn steering evenly back to full left lock using friction gauge, e.g. VAS 6222. Read off torque required to turn steering.
  27. Unscrew adjuster screw for hydraulic thrust piece one graduation anti-clockwise.
  28. Then check steering torque again .
  29. Screw in adjuster screw for hydraulic thrust piece one graduation in clockwise direction.
  30. Then check steering torque again .
  31. Install steering rack .
  32. Check wheel alignment .

Who makes these pages, and how

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.

The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.

Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
