Removing gearbox - vehicles with 8-cyl. FSI engine (Audi RS 4) — AUDI
Removing gearbox - vehicles with 8-cyl. FSI engine (Audi RS 4) on Audi: 64 steps, 2 torque figures. What to remove, what to tighten and to how many Nm.
Workshop procedure for AUDI — the exact step sequence and torque figures, straight from real workshop data.
🔩 Torque settings
Values can differ between engine variants — check the code stamped on your block.
| Torque | Fastener / step |
|---|---|
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Secure support elements to left side of gearbox, as shown in illustration |
| 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) | Secure support elements to right side of gearbox, as shown in illustration |
ℹ️ Always cross-check the exact figure against your vehicle's factory manual before final tightening — a wrong torque can damage the engine. These values are extracted from workshop data and may not cover every variant or revision.
📋 Procedure
- Lift up floor covering in boot and secure in position.
- ⚠ Follow steps required when disconnecting battery Electrical system27. — With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap (arrow).
- Detach bonnet seal at lock carrier and at wing flanges.
- To avoid damaging edges of wing panels with support bracket10 - 222 A, insert wing compensation plates T40045 on both sides between the wing mounting flange and the body panel underneath.
- Set up support bracket10 - 222 A on wing mounting flanges.
- Attach two spindles to lifting eyes at rear of engine.
- Partly take up weight of engine on spindles of support bracket, but do not lift.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Release quick release fasteners (1), unscrew bolts (2) and remove noise insulation.
- Unbolt bracket for noise insulation (arrows).
- Unbolt bracket for electrical wiring harness at engine support (right-side) (arrow).
- Unscrew nuts (1) at bottom of engine mountings (left and right).
- Detach electrical connector (2) from vehicle level sender (front left)G78. [Note: (Item 1) can be disregarded.]
- Before slackening subframe mountings, check whether locating pins3393 can be fully inserted into holes (1) and (2) in subframe (arrow).
- ⚠ If this is not the case, wheel alignment has to be checked after installing the subframe. — First remove front bolts (2) and (3) on subframe (left and right). Then remove bolts (1).
- Lower subframe at the front.
- Unscrew bottom engine/gearbox securing bolts (arrows).
- Temporarily secure subframe again. [Note: Flexible element in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged.]
- ⚠ Do not renew bolts yet or tighten to their final torque. This will be done when installing the gearbox. — Disconnect exhaust system at clamps (1) and (2).
- ⚠ Risk of damaging engine speed sender G28.Remove engine speed sender G28 before removing gearbox.Otherwise the engine speed sender G28 will be damaged irreparably when the gearbox is pulled off the engine. — Bend heat shield slightly to one side.
- Unscrew bolt (arrow) at engine speed sender G28 on left of gearbox.
- Move engine speed sender G28 with heat shield clear to one side.
- Apply lifting column of engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A to tunnel cross member from below (with gearbox support T10337 attached).
- First unscrew bolts (1) and (2) on tunnel cross member, then bolts (3) and (4).
- Carefully lower tunnel cross member with engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A until distance between tunnel cross member and body reaches dimension "„x“". [Note: The gearbox must not be lowered further than this, otherwise the propshaft joint and wiring or other connections at the plenum chamber partition panel can be damaged. If necessary re-adjust spindles of support bracket10-222 A so that dimension (x) is not exceeded.]
- Unbolt heat shields (arrow) for drive shafts (left and right).
- Unbolt drive shafts from gearbox flanges. [Note: Make sure you do not damage surface coating on drive shafts.]
- Detach electrical connectors (1 ... 4) from bracket on gearbox.
- Unplug electrical connectors.
- Detach heat insulation sleeve at electrical wiring harness and move individual lengths of wiring clear.
- Remove bolts (1) and (2) and remove bracket for front exhaust pipe (left side).
- Remove nuts (arrows).
- Detach front exhaust pipe (left-side) with catalytic converters.
- Unbolt bracket for front exhaust pipe (left-side) on gearbox (arrows).
- Unscrew bolts (1) and (2) and remove front exhaust pipe bracket (right-side).
- Remove nuts (arrows).
- Detach front exhaust pipe (right-side) with catalytic converters.
- Unbolt bracket for front exhaust pipe (right-side) on gearbox (arrows).
- Unscrew two nuts (arrows) and detach tunnel cross member.
- Unbolt heat shield for propshaft (arrows).
- Remove bolts (arrows) at gearbox/propshaft flange.
- Slide propshaft together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially.
- Tie up propshaft to side.
- Unplug electrical connector (arrow) for reversing light switch F4 on gearbox (right-side).
- Move electrical wiring clear.
- Unscrew connecting rod (2) for selector rod.
- Remove hexagon socket head bolt from push rod (1).
- Unscrew nut (arrow) and detach gearbox selector lever from selector shaft.
- Move Lambda probe wires clear at top of gearbox.
- Remove bolts (2) and (4) on heat shield for starter.
- Remove securing nut (3) and bolt (1).
- Pull starter out of gearbox housing.
- Remove remaining engine gearbox securing bolts, but leave 2 bolts in position (tightened lightly).
- If not already provided, drill a hole of 10.2 mm ∅ (arrow) in the support elements of gearbox support3282.
- To remove manual gearbox 0A3, four-wheel drive, set up gearbox support3282 with adjustment plate3282/38 and place on engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A. [Note: The support elements(arrows) are shown on the adjustment plate in schematic form. The arrow on the adjustment plate points in the direction of travel.Adjustment plate can only be fitted in one correct position.]
- Align the adjustment plate parallel to the gearbox.
- Secure support elements to left side of gearbox, as shown in illustration. Tighten bolt (M10 x 20) (arrow on right side) to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Secure support elements to right side of gearbox, as shown in illustration. Tighten bolt (M10 x 20) (arrow on left side) to 20 Nm. — 20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- Remove 2 last engine/gearbox bolts.
- Press gearbox off dowel sleeves and lower carefully with engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A just far enough to gain access to clutch slave cylinder. [Note: When lowering gearbox, take care not to damage pipe/hose assembly for clutch slave cylinder.]

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
Seen a figure that does not match your manual? Write to us — we correct it and note when. support@torqfix.com
