Removing gearbox - vehicles with 6-cylinder fuel injection engine — AUDI
Removing gearbox - vehicles with 6-cylinder fuel injection engine on Audi: 46 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Taking the gearbox out of an Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015) with the six-cylinder petrol engine and manual gearbox means removing the transfer box first and supporting the engine from a fairly elaborate bracket arrangement. Check for a coded radio before disconnecting the battery earth, and put the air suspension into jacking mode if fitted. The plenum chamber seals come off and the support bracket is built up on the wing flanges with a short spindle at the rear lifting eye and a long one at the front. Underneath, the noise insulation, catalytic converters, transfer box, starter and exhaust bracket come away. The slave cylinder is pulled out and tied up with its line closed. Getting the bracket pins secured and keeping the rear spindle adjusted while lowering are what make this go well.
🧭 Before you start
After the battery, plenum seals and bracket set-up, the car is raised and the exhaust and catalytic converters, then the transfer box, are removed. Lower engine-to-gearbox bolts, the starter and the exhaust bracket follow, then the slave cylinder, coolant pipe bracket, reversing light switch connector and breather line are freed and the upper bolts reached with extensions. The gearbox support is fitted with its adapters and bolted to the gearbox, the wooden block from the transfer box removal is taken out, and the gearbox is lowered while the rear spindle is readjusted. The last bolt comes out, the input shaft is drawn out of the clutch, the selector cables are released and the gearbox is guided past the exhaust pipes, front final drive and subframe.
Fits: Audi Q7 (4L, 2005–2015)
Don't miss
- Get the radio anti-theft code before disconnecting the battery if a coded radio is fitted.
- Secure the bracket support with the retaining pins and split pins of the connecting pieces.
- Activate jacking mode on air-suspended cars before raising them.
- Do not open the slave cylinder hydraulic connections; tie it up intact.
- The plugs marked in the procedure must be installed after the gearbox goes back in.

📋 Procedure
- First check whether a coded radio is fitted. If this is the case, obtain the anti-theft coding.
- With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap Electrical system27.
- Remove profiled seals and seal for plenum chamber General body repairs, exterior55.
- Set up support bracket10-222A with adapters10-222 A/22, connecting pieces T40091/3 and adapter T40093/6 on wing mounting flanges.
- Insert threaded rod of short spindle10-222A/10 through slot in adapter T40093/6. At the same time engage hook on rear engine lifting eye. [Note: The support bracket10-222A must be set up so that the spindle10-222A/10 does not contact the plenum chamber (arrow).Use thrust pad from assembly tool10-222A/10 to keep the spindle3301 straight when it is turned.]
- Attach remaining parts of support bracket as shown in illustration. Set up adapters T40093/3 on metal flanges of longitudinal members. To do so, push refrigerant line (left side) slightly to one side.
- Insert support T40091/2 with slide T40093/5 into the two connecting pieces T40093/4.
- Attach long spindle from support bracket10-222A to front engine lifting eye using shackle10-222A/12. [Note: The purpose of setting up support bracket with attached spindles is only in order to prevent the engine from dropping down. Please note that the spindles must therefore be re-adjusted accordingly when raising and lowering the engine/gearbox assembly with the engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383/A.]
- ⚠ Secure support T40091/2 using the retaining pins and split pins of the connecting pieces T40093/4. — Activate jacking mode if vehicle has air suspension 43.
- Raise vehicle 406.
- Remove bolts and detach front noise insulation (1) and rear noise insulation (2).
- Unbolt bracket for noise insulation (arrows).
- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamps. Remove catalytic converters (1) (first detach brackets (2) and (3) from body and bracket (4) from gearbox carrier) 26. [Note: The catalytic converters (1) have to be removed in order to prevent damage to the flexible joints on the front exhaust pipes when moving the engine/gearbox assembly.]
- Remove transfer box Transfer box and final drives34.
- Remove bottom engine/gearbox securing bolts (arrows). [Note: The plugs (A) must be installed after the gearbox is installed.]
- Remove engine/gearbox securing bolt (arrow 1) below starter.
- Detach heat insulation mat (A) and wiring from starter Electrical system27.
- Also remove wiring retainer for positive wire (B) from exhaust system bracket (C).
- Then remove bolt (arrow 2) for exhaust system bracket.
- Remove bottom bolt (arrow 3) securing starter to gearbox.
- Then detach exhaust system bracket (A) from gearbox (arrows).
- Remove engine/gearbox securing bolt (arrow A).
- Remove top securing bolt (arrow B) for starter and detach starter.
- Unclip pipe/hose line from retainer (2) on gearbox.
- Remove bolt (1) and pull out slave cylinder to the rear.
- Tie up slave cylinder (do not open hydraulic connections).
- Remove bolt (3) and detach bracket for coolant pipes (4) from gearbox.
- Unplug connector (1) from reversing light switch F4(arrow).
- Unclip breather line (A) for gearbox from bracket (B) and pivot breather line downwards.
- Remove top engine/gearbox securing bolts (arrows). [Note: These securing bolts are accessible from behind the gearbox with the appropriate ratchet extensions.]
- Insert gearbox support3282 in engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A.
- Align arms of gearbox support according to holes in adjustment plate.
- Secure adapterVW 771/40 on left side of gearbox in threaded hole for securing bolt for slave cylinder.
- Screw adapter3282/54 onto front left post of gearbox support.
- Position engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A with gearbox support3282 under vehicle.
- Secure gearbox to gearbox support3282 using bolts (A) (M10x20) and (B) (M10x30).
- Now raise gearbox enough so you can remove wooden block (A) (inserted between gearbox and subframe when removing transfer box).
- Then lower gearbox carefully with engine and gearbox jackV.A.G 1383 A. [Note: While lowering the gearbox, keep readjusting the rear spindle10-222A/10 on the support bracket10-222 A. Use the stepladderVAS 5085.]
- Remove last securing bolt (arrow) above opening for starter.
- Press gearbox off engine (dowel sleeves) and guide gearbox input shaft out of clutch.
- Lever caps (1) for selector cables off top of gearbox.
- Remove securing clips (2) and selector cables (3) from pins (4) of gearbox selector lever and gate relay lever.
- Pull securing clips (A) off cable support bracket (D) on gearbox.
- Remove gear selector cable (B) and gate selector cable (C) from cable support bracket.
- Then guide gearbox (A) past front exhaust pipes (C)(arrow 1), at the same time changing position of gearbox with spindles of gearbox support3282 as required.
- When lowering gearbox, guide it past front final drive and subframe (B)(arrow 2).

TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
