Removing bevel box - vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine (TD6) — AUDI
Removing bevel box - vehicles with 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine (TD6) on Audi: 24 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
Taking out the bevel box (front transfer case) on four-wheel-drive cars with the 2.0-litre TFSI engine, covering the Audi Q3 (8U, 2011–2018) and the second platform code listed below. The work is done from the right-hand wheel arch and underneath: wheel and noise insulation off, oil level sender unplugged, anti-roll bar link, swivel joint and the right drive shaft released, and the suspension strut swung out and supported. The propshaft flexible coupling is marked and unbolted, the pendulum support bolt removed so the engine can be pushed forward, and the propshaft pulled back. The bevel box is then drawn off the gearbox with a puller and multi-purpose tool. The propshaft flange seal is the part most easily damaged.
🧭 Before you start
Remove the right front wheel and noise insulation, unplug the oil level sender, free the anti-roll bar link and swivel joint, tie up the right drive shaft and support the strut outwards. Remove the heat shield, mark and unbolt the propshaft coupling, release the pendulum support and pull the propshaft off. Remove brackets and the top bevel box bolts, slacken the bottom bolts to the set dimension, then draw the bevel box off with puller T10472 and tool VW 771 and remove it.
Fits: Audi Q3 (8U, 2011–2018); platform code 84
- Timing position: the crankshaft or camshaft is set and locked during this job
- Special tools named: locking pin, puller
Don't miss
- Secure the strut support's locking pin and swivel joint with clip and nut before working under it.
- Mark the flexible coupling against the bevel box flange for refitting.
- Protect the seal in the propshaft flange; if damaged the propshaft must be renewed.
- Only slacken the bottom bevel box bolts to dimension a so the gearbox cannot drop.
- Do not damage the surface coating on the drive shaft.

📋 Procedure
- Remove front wheel (right-side) Running gear, axles, steering44Wheels, tyres.
- Remove noise insulation (1)General body repairs, exterior66Noise insulation; Removing and installing noise insulation.
- Unplug electrical connector (1) at oil level and oil temperature sender G266.
- Unclip bracket (2) for electrical wiring leading to oil level and oil temperature sender G266 at subframe.
- Unscrew nut (arrow) for coupling rod on anti-roll bar (right-side).
- If fitted, unscrew nut for bracket for front right vehicle level sender G289.
- Remove nuts (arrows) securing swivel joint (right-side).
- Disengage swivel joint (right-side) from wishbone.
- Detach drive shaft (right-side) from bevel box and tie up Running gear, axles, steering40Drive shaft; Removing and installing drive shaft. [Note: Make sure you do not damage surface coating on drive shaft.]
- Swivel suspension strut (right-side) outwards and support with extension 2024A/1, as shown in illustration.
- ⚠ Risk of accident if parts of support are not properly secured.Secure locking pin and swivel joint with retaining clip (arrow) and nut (1). — Remove bolts (arrows) and detach heat shield (1).
- Mark position of flexible coupling relative to bevel box flange for re-installation.
- Remove bolts (arrows) securing flexible coupling of propshaft to bevel box (counterhold triangular flange with suitable lever).
- Remove bolt (1) for pendulum support and push engine/gearbox assembly forwards (arrow) until it is possible to re-install bolt.
- Detach propshaft from bevel box. [Note: If seal is damaged propshaft must be renewed.]
- ⚠ The seal (arrow) in the propshaft flange can be damaged.Push propshaft towards the rear and to the right side of the vehicle as far as possible. — Remove bolts (arrows) and detach bracket (1).
- Remove bolts (arrows 1, 2) and detach bracket for bevel box.
- Remove top bolts (1) securing bevel box to gearbox. [Note: Use a jointed socket wrench (2) to unscrew bolts.]
- Loosen bottom bolts (arrows) securing bevel box to gearbox: unscrew only as far as dimension (a). [Note: This prevents the gearbox from dropping out when it is slackened with multi-purpose toolVW 771.]
- Attach puller T10472 to bevel box, as shown in illustration.
- Prepare multi-purpose toolVW 771 with a washer (a) and 2 sleeves from engine and gearbox support supplementVW 540/1 B, as shown in illustration.
- Secure multi-purpose toolVW 771 to puller T10472 and detach bevel box from gearbox.
- Remove multi-purpose tool and puller.
- Remove bottom bolts and remove bevel box.

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
