Removing and installing vane pump - Vehicles with 6-cyl. 5V engine — AUDI
Removing and installing vane pump - Vehicles with 6-cyl. 5V engine on Audi: 33 steps. What to remove, in what order, and what to check after.
This job takes the power steering vane pump off the Audi six-cylinder five-valve engines on the platform codes listed below. The pump hides behind the ignition coil holder, so after the noise insulation and engine top cover come off and the poly V-belt is released with pin wrench 3212, the coil connectors are unplugged and the four holder bolts removed so the holder can be swung back. The pulley is then held with the same pin wrench and unscrewed, the suction and return pipes are clamped with hose clamps 3094, and the suction hose and expansion hose are detached before the holder comes out with the pump attached. Two details decide the result: new seals on the pressure hose banjo bolt and the suction hose lined up with its P mark.
🧭 Before you start
Clear the top cover and noise insulation, slacken the belt and lock the tensioner, clamp the hydraulic pipes and swing the ignition coil holder rearwards. Remove the pulley, disconnect suction and expansion hoses, unbolt the pump holder and take out holder and pump together. Refit the pump to the holder, tighten the two front bolts before the two rear ones, fit the banjo bolt on new seals and the suction hose to the P mark. After refitting the belt and coil holder, check fluid level, bleed the system and look for leaks.
Fits: platform code 4A
- Special tools named: 3094
Don't miss
- Mark belt running direction before removal; a used belt reversed could be destroyed.
- Tighten the holder bolts at the front first, then the two at the rear.
- Fit new seals to the pressure hose banjo bolt every time.
- Line the suction hose up with mark (P) at the pump end.
- Remove hose clamps 3094 before the system is filled and bled.

📋 Procedure
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Unclip the engine top cover and detach.
- Slacken off the poly V-belt for the vane pump, viscous fan and alternator.
- Secure with a pin wrench3212. [Note: Mark the direction of the poly V-belt prior to removal. Running a used belt in the opposite direction could destroy it. Ensure correct belt positioning in pulleys when fitting.]
- Detach the poly V-belt from the pulley.
- Pinch off the suction and return pipes with hose clamps 3094.
- Unplug the 5-pin connector at the ignition coils.
- Unplug the three rear connectors (A) from the ignition coils.
- Screw out the four bolts.
- Swivel the ignition coil holder to the rear.
- Provide support with a pin wrench3212 and unscrew the vane pump pulley.
- Screw out the bolt (arrow).
- Unfasten the clamp (1) and detach the suction hose.
- Unscrew the expansion hose (2).
- Unscrew the vane pump holder.
- Take out the holder with pump.
- Then unscrew the vane pump from the holder.
- Screw the pump to the holder.
- Insert the pump with holder.
- Fit all bolts, tighten the two at the front and then the two at the rear.
- Attach new seals to the banjo bolt.
- Tighten the banjo bolt for the pressure hose (2).
- Screw the pipe of the expansion hose to the cylinder head (bolt ).
- Fit the suction hose (1).
- Pay attention to the mark (P) for the pump-end hose connection.
- Detach the hose clamps 3094.
- Tighten the hexagon socket head bolts of the pulleys for the vane pump.
- Fit the poly V-belt 13.
- Fit the holder for the ignition coils.
- Connect the ignition cables to the ignition coils.
- Check the hydraulic fluid level .
- Bleed the steering system .
- Check the steering system for leaks .

Who makes these pages, and how
TorqFix was built by a mechanic — after a 2,700 km drive with five roadside repairs that no diagnostic tool could explain.
The figures on this page come from manufacturer workshop documentation and are shown as they are. The page is assembled automatically from that data — it is not written by an AI. The AI works in the chat, where it answers for your specific car. It writes nothing here.
Variants of the same model differ. Cross-check torque against the factory manual for your engine before final tightening.
